Hi, We are orf to France,Spain & Portugal in a couple of weeks.

Last year we booked in for a couple of nights at camping orsuna in Madrid so that we could visit the sites, museums etc & know that the vehicle was "relatively" safe while we were away. But it is a dump & not cheap. Anybody have a better site close to the metro system in Madrid.?

Dezi,
You could go to Cosalada which is just west of Madrid (12 km from the centre) opposite the airport across the N11
We used to stop there with the trucks for many years at a place called Freds Bar. It is odd Avenide de Europe, C.I.T.I. Cosalada, Cosalada, Madrid. It is at the edge of an Industrial estate where trucks park while waiting for loads, customs or whatever. I have no idea if Fred is still there but the place will be. You could park right by the restaurant and your vehicle would be safe. Walk into Cosalada 10 minutes, catch a train and then the metro. Only takes just over half an hour all in. Done it a few times.
There is also a secure truck compound near by but don't know how much.
If I were going, I would head for Freds and I am sure you will be ok there. There is also security patrolling.
Check it out on Autoroute or whatever.

edit.
Dezi,
you must go to Avilla, one of the largest walled cities in Europe. It is north west of Madrid up the National V1 (6) direction Corunia but turn off towards Salamanca. Well worth it and also Salamanca.
You go through Avilla and Salamanca if you are going to Oporto from Madrid.

Hi *****,Thanks for info. We have been roaming the Iberian peninsular for a few years & have visited the sites you mention. This year we will be coming back from Braganza towards Madrid.Campsites however in the capital are like hens teeth, only ever found 2 Camping orsuna & Alpha camping. both basic & a bit pricey
but it looks like we are stuck with them.

Quite agree Camping Orsuna is a dump but so handy for visiting Madrid.

Own facilities is a must.

Top tip make sure you go in with own water.
