We are heading for Madrid next month, hoping to find somewhere to park overnight or find a campsite within striking distance of Madrid city centre.
Has anyone done this before?
We are keen and able cyclists if slightly out of town (15-20 miles), or we catch public transport.
Your help appreciated.. thanks in advance.

Dave

Google Madrid Camping. we were going to be going there earlier this year, found a municipal site not far from metro to city centre

Good Luck:tongue:

Done that before I posted here... found two campsites in Madrid and one of them does not allow tag axle motorhomes, the other had 5 places left for our dates.
Just wondered if anyone can recommend one?

if you go right into the heart of the city then street parking works .
had to stay there once to get mauratania visa,s . worried it would be difficult but loads of wide street parking all over the place . night here , night there .

Really? Drive into the capital? One night would be all that was needed if we done that.
What size outfit did you have?

mini artic . remember in spain trucks park in all sorts of daft places but really you would get away with it . even supermarket car parks . loads room . get there in the evening leave next evening . or very early morning .
we had to go to the uk embassy to get a letter saying we were only going as holiday makers . then go to the mauratanian embassy to get the visa . but didnt know till we went to mauratanian one what we had to do, spent 4 nights for free in madrid .
you find many foreign cities its easier to street park.
london used to be good before this daft system they have now .
i have had the trailer 17yrs now . was pulled by a vw lt50 at the time.

if you look at a street map of madrid its easy.
there is a road goes virtually south to north , just head north or south cant get lost.
use a compass forget satnavs .

I have also found this info on Campervan Life:
Camping Osuna
Avda. de Logrono, near the airport, just north of the NII road to Barcelona. Not signposted.
tel: 917 410 510
Reasonable campsite. Has a good popular bar, and plenty of shade. Can be noisy with noise from the airport. Easy walk to the Canillejas/Campo Metro station. Next to the massive Juan Carlos parque, which is a great place to walk and cycle. Expensive, but it is a city campsite.

Free camping in Madrid:
Try the park around the Camping Osuna campsite. There are some car parks off the roads which are ok for free camping. Madrid is a big city though, so take care with crime.

Parking in Madrid
Parking in the city area is not a good idea. To avoid getting into the city try parking around the parks at the airport, near the Camping Osuna campsite. You can then take the Metro to the city. There are also secure parking facilities here, catering for the airports, if you want to leave your vehicle and stay in a hotel in the centre.

Around Madrid:
Getafe
A fairly industrial area, 18kms from Madrid.

Very helpful staff. It can be noisy as it’s close to a road and an industrial estate (Poligono). Used by Spanish week-enders but in the winter it is quiet. Hard standing. You can get into Madrid using bus and metro quite easily. Madrid is not an easy city to drive in!

El Escorial:
43 kms NW of Madrid.

Camping El Escorial
A large holiday site. Has a supermarket and a summer opening swimming pool. Good sports facilities. Expensive.

Aranjuez:
50 kms from Madrid.

Camping Soto del Castilla
Very quiet and well kept on banks of river. Moderately priced.

i nearly said look near airport . have stopped around there . but then found in the middle it was just as easy. the road we stopped on was a wide duall carriage city road with parking on the sides . in the day busy but worked fine .
used to go around madrid on the m40 , so know where you mean . but needing a visa had no choice . after driving through once never drove round again just went straight through the middle .

You should find Madrid nice & quiet in August, the place shuts down & everyone buggers off to the hills or the coast because it's too bloody hot in town.

Once driving through the city, had to wind the windows up as it was like a fan heater blowing in my face and we were eating out at midnight cos it was too hot before then.

Honestly, you really will DIE in Madrid in August, unless you park somewhere with EHU, under full shade, and have your onboard aircon working full blast 24 hours.

It is regularly up to 40 degrees in the shade and maybe still mid 30's even at the "coolest" time of night.

It's why all the madrileños desert the city in August and flee towards the cooler mountains/coastal regions.

Just discovered this post and I have to say we managed fine when we camped on the outskirts of Madrid. We love the sun, but did not get burned and were outside most of the time, as we were next to a tree.
We used air con only when driving, but not all the time. I think the temperature was not as hot as you say when we visited, we must have been lucky, cause we are still both alive. :)

We have Spanish friends in Madrid [ Las Matas] I drove there last year to have a cuddle from their new baby and to see their other 2 gorgeous Children, we wild camped in the road outside their home for 2 nights , Madrid is surprisingly easy to drive around.
