The Murvi sailed through the mot this morning ,no problems.

Not really surprising my usual 9,000 miles a year was down to 4,000 due to
Doctors, hospitals ,dental appointments and two funerals.

Mot + oil and filter changes = £ 122.60

Not bad methinks.

Dezi :)

I remember when the first M. O. T. s came in 1960.
15 shillings per test and only for vehicles over 10 years.
Happy days.

I would have to take issue with you Trev. I have been MOTing multiple vehicles each year (including Skoda and Lada) here in Northern Ireland since the system was introduced. The system is indeed government run and staffed. They do not carry out any repairs and so have no vested interest in failing vehicles. A fair proportion of the test is carried out by machinery which means the testers cannot alter results. The guys who do the tests are by a huge majority pleasant lads who are always particularly interested in the Motorhome.
Give me this impartial system any day of the week rather than the dubious system operated by garages in GB. If the vehicle is properly maintained and serviced the likelihood of failure is remote but since virtually all inspection points are linked to safety then there is no quibble.

Sometimes I wonder wether we live within 50 miles of each other. I read some of the things you state about life in Northern Ireland and cringe. At the same time you are a great ambassador for tourism in the north. Why are the two things so polar opposites.

I've got to say I've never had an issue with the, mot station I use to test all my vehicles from the motorhome to the Land rovers....

IF it fails
it fails because something doesn't meet the MOT standard no iffs no buts...
They just follow the mot test manual and practices.

Frankly I think a lot of folks that moan that their chosen mot tester are the ones that don't bother maintaining their vehicle to a roadworthy standard.

The MOT test isn't some dark arcane art or some secret society...
The standards and testing methods are published in black and white for folks to read...
There is actually very little in the way of grey areas or tester being able to fail stuff that doesn't need work....
Most testers really don't like having the chaps around that investigate and test them so wouldn't risk their tester status for a few quid for the garage they work in.

Do you have to pay a retest fee? Leastways they should be fair and not fail just to get the repair work
Yes but a reduced fee, all sometimes for a bulb that went on the way to the test, no advisories here.

Because one or two of the testers were caught letting there mates get a pass on rust issues, like chassis on landies and rangrovers, while Johny me got turned down on a bulb they said was to bright, standard 21w brake bulb, changed it and went back and got a pass, nothing wrong with the first one.

MOT time is always fraught with stress for us as we do not maintain our vehicles, we just can't afford it and usually we don't keep them that long, so we have the MOT done and work with what we are told, I'm aware enough to know if there is a problem and in that case it does get fixed but nothing on a regular basis.

We use older vehicles,. Newest at moment is an 07 iveco van. Maintenance is fix a problem when it's noticed. Mot failures are normally either rust or suspension / steering components wear ,. Neither of which are easy to detect without the vehicle hoisted on a ramp unless their really bad, and the mot tester would have found them at last test. I've just not got any enthusiasm for poking round under vehicles looking for problems that aren't yet an issue.

Under the law it is in fact your responsibility to keep the vech up to scratch, and as tought in the army, you should do an inspection every day before use, 100 press-ups.

Just have to move to the Isle of Man Trevor, no MOT. 🤣😉
