I don't know for UK-ferries, but on longer ferry trips in Scandinavia a sticker is put at the gas locker and the door has to be unlocked during the trip. Gas bottles have to be shut-off during the trip (and on the road also)
I think you need one by law, incase of fire let's the firemen know where the bottles are, but they have already melted by the time they arrive on scene
In Scandanavia they apply another sticker to your locker before boarding Ferries, these are a Yellow triangle with a slim gas cylinder in black on them.
