My neighbour has a VW Camper Van, which he runs on LPG Propane gas. Is it possible for him to feed from the tank to his cooker and heating system?? I have encouraged him to join us on the Forum as a full Member. Your advice would be much appreciated.

Hi David & Ann,

It is possible and would depend on the tank which would need a top takeoff and a method of ensuring that it was gas that it was taking off, ie 80% max fill. To change the tank would cost a mint. A transfer system to another small tank may well be possible but this could come under refilling tanks, which is a bit controversial. If you can wait until Vwalan comes back from Morocco I am sure he will have a much better answer for you.

If you don't want to wait you might like to try a company like B.E.S Ltd, Plumbing and Gas supplies for an adaptor

Why not get your neighbour to join the forum?

Hi David,

Good to be here at last!

Thanks for asking this, and now, at last, thanks to Richard and Bev and that previous discussion - I've got it! LPG autogas runs off liquid fuel from the tank, and of course, we need vaporised gas for appliances.

My black tank only has the one valve assembly near the top, so I'm assuming it's all liquid feed (there are five ports on it, only two of which appear to be used - the inlet and a servo controlled outlet - I guess it's possible that one of the others could be a blanked off feed to gas not liquid LPG)

There again, presumably, there's a regulator somewhere that converts the liquid into gas before going into the engine, so maybe there's a possibility of taking a feed off there - though that would require the LPG system to be powered up to open the values etc.

Oh well, no easy answer - it's just annoying that I pay 70-80p a litre for LPG and because I've only got the 3.9kg bottles in my van, which cost about £16 to replace with, i think about 8 litres of propane, that works out at about £2 a litre :(

As my propex heater is thirsty, it makes a difference!

Anyway, looking forward to being a member here, thanks for encouraging me.

I'm going to start off investigating the POIs

Cheers to all

Welcome John. Sorry for the VW error. You can take it from here. Don't need to talk to each other when we take the dogs for a walk on the beach, we can always post on here. ☺ ☺ ☺

welcome, and a question for you

Hi, and welcome to this friendly forum.

You mentioned having two 3.9kg propane, we have bought a new camper which also has a blown air heater, and water boiler. My question is this..

How long can you go on these two bottles, using the heater for an hour or so each evening, and heating enough water for the dishes, morning ablutions etc. We also have a 3 way fridge, so will be using gas as we only wild-camp.

We are going for two weeks in april/may through the alps to northern italy. Should I be carrying extra spares?

Hope you can help. Thanks in anticipation.

Hi there,

I'm afraid that I really couldn't say :(

I don't think an hour a night will cause too much trouble, I was using mine at -6C outside all night and that seemed to be pretty thirsty!

The fridge, again shouldn't use too much... on occasional wild camps in the two weeks.

I suspect two full 3.9kgs would last, but no harm in taking another spare!!

Sounds great, have fun!

John

You can get a tank with both drawoffs so you can use appliances and engine, but not cheap.
I spoke to my local LPG installer about it and he has seen the tanks, but rare
