LPG Conversions instead of Calor?

Hi all :help:

I'm planning to tour around Europe for a while with my doggies and when i started looking into it i was advised by my local caravan shop that it would be easier if i changed my Calor gas bottles over to LPG.

They recommended a system called Gaslow and it costs £600 to fit.

My understanding is that Calor gas bottles are hard to come by on the continent and that i would need different adaptors in different countries but if i change to LPG i can just fill up at a petrol station.

The other benefit is that it's a lot cheaper being about £10 to fill the two bottles compared to £40 odd at the moment.

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this system or if anyone has any advice?

Thanks

What ever system you go for be it Gas-It, Gaslow or Alugas, make sure that you have an external filler cap fitted. Some of the garages in France were stopping people filling last year. IIRC it was the Total chain.

Go in, fill up with Autogas, pay for it and run away. Drive around again and fill up with Diesel but don't fill up with Diesel and then try and fill up the LPG: That might give you problems

Have a great time :)

I have twin 11kg gaslow bottles which I fitted myself had it now 4 years, best thing that I invested in, no lifting of heavy bottles, on our 3 weeks holiday abroad never run out of gas even though I carry the French adapter never had to use it.

Thanks everyone..

I have found some bottles by a company called safefill .. They are like the calor bottles in that they're portable but you can full them from the pump with lpg..

They are a lot cheaper than getting the whole system fitted and seem pretty good.. I think i'll go with them.. Well obviously let all know how they are! Lol..

thanks again..

Be careful, most places in Europe will not let you fill loose bottles, even in the UK one has to take these Safefill bottles to designated outlets.

LPG Conversions v Calor

Hi Rockchick,

Refillable LPG systems e.g. Gaslow do cost less than Calor though the LPG price is currently trending ever upwards, now over £0.70/L. The main consideration is how long you are going to be outside the UK & how much gas do you use - for cooking only, cooking & hot water or night time heating as well. Everyone's gas consumption varies widely; we (2of us) found a 6kg cylinder lasted for weeks & weeks, despite cooking daily & using a gas fridge. Other people seem to get through litres of gas almost daily.

The Gaslow system does free you from needing a different cylinder & connecting union for practically every country in Europe. Your price quote of £600 for a Gaslow installation seems way too high. With Gaslow you need 1 adapter for north Europe (France, Germany, Benelux etc.) and 1 for southern Europe, Italy & I think Portugal/Greece though I have never refilled in the latter two. There are virtually no or none LPG roadside garages in Spain. Under Spanish law you can't even buy a gas cylinder unless you have a recognised address; Spanish gas officials have the power to check that your installation is safe & so require a known address. Beware trying to refill loose LPG cylinders; not allowed in many countries & often not refillable anyway due to union thread incompatibility; gas suppliers usually refuse to fill another companie's cylinders. Also Eurostar/Ferry Companies can refuse carriage if your vehicle has too many loose gas cylinders on board. Ivecotrucker.

its changing alot in spain now .there are alot of lpg places repsol have been putting filling tanks all over the place. but you can easily get bottles .cepsa were giving them away not long ago. 10euro deposit normally . you will need another filler adaptor for spain called a euro nozzle but most lpg garages lend them . its far cheaper to swap bottles though.

Getting gas bottles in France isn't a problem last year Intermarche were charging just 1 euro deposit and don't forget bottle gas in cheaper there this link Propane Pol to Butane Adaptor is the adapter that you need to use propane regulator with French bottle also make sure you get what you need there's no difference between butane and propane bottles just what stamped on then

I will be amazed if you are allowed to fill the SAFEFILL cylinders in France. The reason that some places were stopping people filling up with LPG was because of faulty DIY gas installations: Hence the suggestion of fitting an external filler and only filling the LPG, paying for the LPG and returning for Diesel and paying for that separately.
