London pedestrians to get traffic light priority over vehicles

Its always been the case that pedestrians have right of way, for obvious reasons.
All traffic light controlled pedestrian crossing I've ever seen the pedestrian press's a button lights change to allow them to cross Cars having priority What PB's link points to is the other way around vehicles have to stop whether there's anyone crossing the road or not doing nothing to help keep traffic flowing to keep pollution levels low

It does say in the link
"‘Green Person Authority’ traffic lights will display a continuous red light to drivers unless they detect approaching traffic, at which point vehicles will be let through temporarily."

On most of the roads I know round here, there's nearly always traffic coming. I'm gonna have to get in my van to cross the road. 😂

Anyway, I'm going to wait to see how they work in practice.

The issue with this scheme is that drivers generally are paying attention to the road and surrounding activity. I can see the pedestrians with their head in their phones and earphones plugged in being so used to the lights being green that they will wander out without checking. It will need large RED lights facing the pedestrians and perhaps a noise to wake them up.
Having said that I am in favour of the scheme (as I live in N. Ireland and it won’t affect me ;) ) I do admire the unmarked crossings in French villages at intervals of perhaps only 100metres. Keeps you on your toes as a driver.

I would always give way to a pedestrian.

Its illegal for them to cross on a red light if traffic is present. Some busy citys you'd cause quite a tail back waiting for them to stop crossing if you always give way to them
We are talking a cross purpose witzend. I am talking about folk on the road, not waiting to cross. Obviously cars can’t stop every time someone wants to cross a road.

Like I said, I'll wait to see it in practice, unless they make drivers stop, get out their motors and go press a button, :p I can't see how much difference it's going to make. I mean the traffic can't get any worse now most the road is cycle lane.

On the A75 in a village near us, there are 'deterrant' traffic lights whose sole job is to stop traffic for a minute if detected going over the 30mph limit.
Strange to see traffic lights just for this alone.

Works quite well in some French village. Go at the speed limit and you get a clear run.
