Hello ev1 - missed all the banter.

Just a quick hellow from Singpore (Chrissy actually) on my way thro to NZ - any tips for places to visit would be great. I'll be based in Wellington and I think there are plans to visit Rotarua???

Hi Chrissy

If you've not got transport sussed try Quality Car Rentals - 3 years ago it was $18 a day ( £6 at that time) & if you're gonna do both islands they run you to the port & pick up the otherside in another car so you can cross as foot passengers ( saves heaps)

We stayed in hostels all the way round ( did 6000 miles) great value, own room & big communal rooms ( usually with log fires !!!) endless video & magazine collections. Watch out for the soup at Kaikoura, they've been adding to it for about 32 years now

just above Wellington try Paraparaumu car museum ( if you like that kind of thing ) awsome. Lake Taupo's a nice spot - Rottenrua - stinks but you get used to it , spectacular place. Napier is a pretty place too

South Island ? Drive the passes, Do the Glaciers - boat trip up Milford sound, check out Wanaka , whale watch at Kaikoura. If you get a chance check out Oamaru. The 2 islands are tiny so you can pack plenty in Speights do a great brewery tour & you get to pull your own beer at the end !

Oh & if you're as sad as me check out Invercargill- right down the bottom - The movie "Worlds fastest Indian" ?? The bike is in the middle of the hardware store in town- between emulsion & generators if memory serves & they have the worlds largest private lorry collection- ask at tourist info they'll give you the number ( It's not "really" open to the public)

My daughter & her boyfriend hired a motorhome when they had a month in New Zealand. They found that it worked out cheaper than hostels & travel. They managed to get a good deal on a small coachbuilt Toyota, they toured both island & had a great time.
