Linking batteries

I decided I would add another leisure battery to our van. As I only bought the current battery in sept I decided to get another one the same. I currently have an unbranded agm 110 ah battery and requested another one from the same seller if arrived today but instead of saying agm it just says gel of 110ah. Can these be linked together or will there be a difference????

Help and advice please

if one is open lead acid and one sealed gel no they cant be linked they have different max charge rates

hi,

No one is an AGM and the other says Gel although i need request AGM. The charger on my electroblok is set to gel which covers AGM and Gel but not sure how effective these would be linked together I thought they had to be the same

My understanding is that AGM and Gel batteries have vastly different charging regimes. Not only are the charge voltages different but the timing is also way different as well.

To be sure, you will need to get the manufacturers recommendations for both the batteries and see where the major differences are.

Easiest to take the new battery back and tell them to supply what you ordered.

Typical comments you will find on the internet are
Gel Cell Batteries are typically a bit more costly and do not offer the same power capacity as do the same physical size AGM battery. The Gel Cell excels in slow discharge rates and slightly higher ambient operating temperatures. One big issue with Gel Batteries that must be addressing is the CHARGE PROFILE. Gel Cell Batteries must be recharged correctly or the battery will suffer premature failure. The battery charger being used to recharge the battery(s) must be designed or adjustable for Gel Cell Batteries. If you are using an alternator to recharge a true Gel Cell a special regulator must be installed.

and
(gel cells have sufficiently different set points to make them totally incompatible with flooded cells or AGMs)

I wouldn't bother with gel batteries for motorhmes. They are expensive and the gel can dry out if overcharged. Stick with lead acid - I think they sent you the wrong type. Best to use reliable suppliers like Tayna.

Well apparently my two batteries are the same??? according to the seller they do look the same. I went for AGM as mine are stored under the seating in the hab part of the van so there is less risk of gassing with these type of batteries. I also got them at a very good price (the same or less as lead acid) so will just have to double check they are the same by weighing and comparing. Should have bought them together at the same time but couldn't stretch to it then. Fingers crossed. thanks for comments
