Hi, I am slowly making plans for our next trip down south. We leave in early March & intend to explore the area between Leucate in southern France & Roses In northern Spain, I already have several wild camping sites, Aires etc in mind, but if any member has personal experience of this area (only this area) with some recommendations then I would be grateful.

We stayed at the Leucate Plage aire Jan 2010. Day after we left and travelled to Roses, Camping Joncar, 12 E / night incl ehu. It took us 2 hrs to travel the 68 mls between the 2 sites.
Joncar is handy for a couple of supermarkets, including of course, Lidl.
Also a lovely walk down the prom.

Hi, Thanks for this info Allen. I understand that Leucate Aire is just 6 places along the road near to a restaurant therefore not much good for a weeks stay . Can you confirm this, or not.

The aire is massive ! In 2 parts, either side of the access road, and adjacent the beach. There are the usual services in both areas.

If someone could explain how to attach a google earth link I'd do it.
I've not been able to attach a *.kmz file as it's not a valid file extension.

Check out CAMPINGCAR-INFOS - there are four aires listed in Leucate, all with co-ordinates, photos and google street view, as well as a list of services provided and size. Happy travels.

Hi, Thanks for this info folks. I think all the ones you have mentioned are paying Aires offering facilities. I only use these every 4/5 days or so as the Murvi is very self sufficient. I am looking for out of the way places to quietly contemplate my naval, or even do some reading.

I do have a new Camperstop arriving in January & I expect there will be plenty of
new sites entered since I had the last one in 2009

Coming from Perpignan, there are a couple of places worth visiting, From Perpignan take the D617 which becomes the D81A for Canet-Plage and St-Cyprien-Plage. At Canet-Plage you can park on the road side right outside the campsite. The beach is opposite you. Though the Campsite is gated, it was no problem to fill up water with a watering can and empty toilets. You cannot drive in as you have to pay.

Cross over the border from France to Spain, hit the N11 (not the AP7, it is a toll road) turn off on the C260 for Roses. Half way down at Castello d'Empuries turn off for SANT PERE PESCADOR. You can park on the dual carriage way with green grass on both sides or go right up to the beach where there is an open area for parking, beyound that are height barriers leading to the beach. You can open up your awnings and stay as long as you wish. Water: from the Campsite, cut through the shop which serves the Camp site and also the Locals. We also shower and do are wahing in there though if you get caught it could be a problem. Very rare as it is a massive site with well over 4/500 Campers. Follow your nose and get to know the joint. We have never had a problem for years.

Thanks for the information but we prefer to pay for what we need. My problem is that we only require topping up every 4/5 days.
It has always seemed totally illogical to me to spend many thousands on a semi self supporting system, then book into a campsite every evening.
