Leisure battery charges fine from alternator but not on mains hookup

Hello Wildcampers,

Please can someone help me diagnose what I am doing wrong or what might be wrong with my Leisure battery charger.

We have a Bilbos VW Komba with a Sargent EC328 power supply.

The unit is working in all respects apart from I can’t get it to charge the leisure battery when connected to mains hook up.

The leisure battery charges fine off the alternator, I have checked all the fuses, we get mains supply when we are on mains hook up but I am not getting any positive charge indicated when the charger is on.

Does anyone know what else I should check or experience of this please?

Regards,

Chris

Check the output direct from the 240-12v charger with a multimeter when the mains is on. Either the charger or the wiring is faulty. If you are getting 14.5v from the charger, trace the wiring on through to the leisure battery inc any inline fuses or other fuses. If you aren't, check the charger input and internal fuses, if fitted.

Have you tried disconnecting the leisure battery when you're on hookup to see if the 12v unit is actually putting anything out? It sounds like it's not. Is there an internal fuse blown in the unit perhaps?

Edited to add - posted at the same time as Firefox - whoops :)

Thanks for your suggestions guys, I will check it out shortly.

Well I couldn't find anything untoward so we took it down to Bilbos who found a fault with the charger. They replaced it FOC and it's charging fine now. Thanks for all your suggestions.

Chris

Hi there.
I only have power on my camper when the engine is running, all the ligts and pump's are working, when i turn it of no ligths no power.
I checkd the fuses they are all good.
Any help is very welcome because i don't know what to do anymore.
Thank's :mad2:

Hi, You need to give more information please. Vehicule type, converter, model, how many lesiure batteries, how old and what you have tried so far, in order for us to try and help. The more info the better the answer. Sounds as if there may be a selector switch that enables you to switch between 12v power sources.

Hi there again.
Thanks for the reply.
My camper is a Fiat Ducato euramobil 1993 2.5 D.
As i say on my message yesterday i dont have power on the back of camper, only if the engine is running, then all is working good.
I try the fuses but no problem there, i try change the leisure battery but still do the same, even when i plug to 230 w still dont work.
I only have one leisure battery and the converter is an AUTOMATIK-BATTERIE-LADESYSTEM EBL 110.
Wanderer, i appreciate your HELP.
Thank's again and look forward for your reply

It is possible that your Electroblok unit is faulty. I wouyld check out other things first as repairs to an EBL are not cheap.

If that is what it turns out to be then contact Alan at www.WEBSITE BLOCKED BY ADMIN. They do new and refurbished units and exchange units much cheaper than elsewhere and are situated in North Wales. Battery charging faults are their speciality and they are very, very helpful over the phone. They will talk you through a diagnosis procedure to determine what the fault is.

Warning If not confident with the use of mulitmeters and 230 Volt equipment do not carry out any maintainance. Get a qualified electricion to do the work

If I have this right the panel is divided into four sections.

1 Is the 230 volt mains input which has an on/off and a re-setable breaker. This should provide power to the in built Leisure battery charger enableing your leisure battery to be charged when the van is on hook up. You should check that there is a current going to that switch. If so check whether there is power being delivered to the leisure battery (should be about 14 volts)

2 Is the 12 volt power section. It has a selector switch which enables you to choose which battery to use either engine or leisure. It should be in leisure position unles your battery is very low then use in engine position ( this is for emergency only) but be warned that will use up your engine battery reserves and may mean that your van will not start. This part of the panel also contains two switches one for the pump and one for truning on the 12 volt system thus alowing you to use the lights and other consumers in the habitation part of your van. Obviously this switch should be in the on position. Check that there is 12 volts going into and then out off the switch. Switches have been known to get tarnished with age and not make a good contact.

3 Is the label

4 Contains the individaul fusses that protect the various circuits within the habitation part of your van.

Hope this helps and is not trying to teach Grandad how to scuk eggs as they say.
