How important is it to have leisure batteries in boxes. Is it acceptable to have the batteries strapped together and secured under the benches? Many thanks in anticipation of your help.

If the batteries or charger fail, and they get 'cooked', there will be electrolyte coming out of them. This is very acidic, and won't do any good to the floor and surrounding areas of the motorhome. At least in a battery box this is contained. Don't forget to fit vent pipes to them if inside the habitation area too.

You want to be able to protect clothes etc from battery acid and if the batteries are not sealed then a way for them to vent, but apart from that insulate the terminals and you will be fine,

Put them in a marine box which must be firmly fixed down and a strap over them,a kill breaker swith is a good thing just in case,if you are running s/panels do pull the fuse or kill switch before the regulator then isolate the battery if required.
