i am in the process of replacing a lead acid battery with two optima yellow top batterise, 55 ah. yts 4.2 my problem is that each time i make the final connection, the 20 amp fuse blows !! both batteries are at the same charge level and wired in correctly. someone suggested that i need to fit a regulator ? can anyone please advise me on this. many thanks.

fiat based burstner ixeo plus it 724 reg 2010.

Sounds like you may have the batteries in series instead of in parallel. This bloke's blog is very helpful:

Hope this helps - Bev

Which fuse blows?

Is this a setup that's been working?

I presume that you've got the two negatives connected neg-neg and you have a fuse between the two positive terminals? Something I personally don't recommend.

If you have a digital volt meter, measure the voltage across each, the voltage should be just about equal, if not there will be a surge and pop goes the fuse.

A little more info please!!

battery probs !!

many thanks for you replies. yes the batteries are wired in parallel without a fuse between the positives, the voltage reading from both are equal. the 20 amp fuse blows on the blue control box under the seat for the habitation side. i've now put the original battery back in so that we can use the van. just to add......... the electric drop down bed has stopped working too !! all very confusing.

What voltage on the Old Batts and the new ones?

Apart from the drop down bed is everything else ok?

What voltage on the old batt when in use ie with habitation lights on and not on hookup?

hi again, yes its only the drop down bed thats not working. one battery is 12.33v and the other is 12.39 v.

the old battery reads 12.6 with habitation lights on and no hookup

With the old batt connected 12.6v is respectable, and doesn't blow fuse.

What if you just connect one of the new batts, what happens?

I'm assuming that the terminals are correctly connected, some batteries look identical, but the terminal polarity is reversed.

Stating the obvious but positive (+) is normally red and negative (-) normally black or just copper braid to earth. Don't wish to insult you, but people do get it wrong!!

What is so special about these battery's
About 4 x's the price of normal battery's ? :scared:
Are they 4 x's better?

Lorry :drive:

12.3 volts is not fully charged, the old battery at 12.6 is normal.I'd measure the batteries and recharge them fully first and check wiring configuration, also check the mh charging system,
Solarman.

to blow a big fuse requires a big current draw. I'd be looking for a short circuit in the electric drop down bed.
