Just changed all my 12 v halogens for these 12 v LED's.
4 off, spot lights, and 9 off the 'flat' ones.
Measured the amp draw, with all 13 LED's on, last night at approx 0.9 amps.
That's about the same as 1 x 10 watt halogen.

MR11 G4 Warm White 21 LED Spot Light Bulb Lamp 12V 1W on eBay (end time 05-Dec-10 10:29:58 GMT)

10 lots 12v G4 20W 19 LED Bright Warm White Light bulbs on eBay (end time 06-Dec-10 03:00:39 GMT)

Said they were coming from China, but 1st ones ('flat ones') arrived within 3 days, and the the spots came after approx 10 days.

Hope this helps others make their minds up.

Just changed ours to LED's from C.A.K What a difference. Draws much less power and only gets warm where as the old bulbs got very hot, This is the way to go.:eek:

Changed ours to LED a couple of years ago - and it was a very good decision. But I am amazed at the low price of the Chinese ones you have just bought - maybe we should have waited a bit!

I recently bought some from bedazzled.co.uk. On their website, they say that new safety legislation is in force now in the USA and draft legislation is going through the EU. These Far East ones might not be OK for much longer.

It is up to you whether you believe the claim or not.

Yeh, I read same at Bedazzled....but at £9 a bulb from them ?

They'll be selling narcotic gas alarms and telling us not to use aires next !

a good and sneaky way of trying to get us to buy of them ,considering most if not all of the bulbs are made over in the far east and they ship them over here . one instance most of maplins electrical gear is shipped over from china .i used to work for them and two big containers came in to the wharehouse twice a week sometimes three times and everything in them came from china. i got some led strip lights from a uk seller on ebay for a mate of mine ,and the guy who was selling them his web site was in china

Got mine from China, but they did take about 3 weeks. Had a problem with a 2 of them (they wouldn't fit the holder as the pins were too thick) but he sent me another 2 to replace them without any hassle. Always thought a bit of a risk buying from china direct but found them to be ok & the price was really cheap.:D

You have got it wrong wints. I paid £6.50 for mine, which is slightly cheaper than they were on aten.

You do not need to remind me that everything is made in China. I suppose there will still be goods of varying quality. ie, crap and cheap crap.

I said in my post that you can believe it or not. I do not care. I do not care that GB is losing trade and it is all going to China. I have made my money and retired. It is you younger ones that should be worrying about your future.

Today's bargain will be very expensive for jobs in this country if you think about it.

We had a bit of luck here. Bought two bulbs from same place - they never arrived. Left neutral feedback as couldn't leave negative or positive as we didn't get them. Then got message saying their account would be suspended for a month if I left neutral feedback would I change it? I said I couldn't as I would be lying, BUT if they sent me the two bulbs I still wanted, I'd pay and change feedback once I received them. They did and much I think to their surprise I immediately paid them and changed the feedback, but put a clear note and sent a message saying don't send the bulbs, I've already got them. Guess what? They sent another two, so we ended up with 4 for the price of 2! There is a God afterall!

Hymer strip lamp

The diffuser covering my strip light over the cooker is cracked all over its length, I was going to try and buy a new one but this thread has made me think about replacing the whole thing with an LED lamp , does anyone have suggestions about a substitute LED for a striplamp of about 16 inches long.

If you google UL8750, it explains the new legislation already in force in the US and under consideration in the EU.

Any lights for sale should be UL8750 compliant, otherwise they will soon be non-conforming to safety standards.

Allen, I see that you also have a preference for warm-white light over the more clinical bluish daylight type bulbs that have been all that is available until very recently.

Did they meet your expectations for quality and quantity of light - ie colour, glare, evenness of light, lack of contrast, dark shadows etc.

Hi Tony
You forgot to mention less expensive !
The 'blueish' white were another tenner (flat led's), so I chose the warmer coloured ones. I figured that if I made a mistake it would be a less costly one.
The spots were only avilable in the warmer white.
Led's only installed a few days ago, so other than down the drive, in the dark, they've not really been tested. But, first impressions are favourable.

As for any forthcoming legislation I can't imagine it being any time soon, nor will it be retrospective.

When we bought ours we selected half "warm" and half "cold" light on the basis that we could swap them if we didn't like them. Within 24 hours we had taken back the "cold" ones to swap for the "warm" ones. Obviously it is a matter of taste but that is our experience.

I have been in a long running battle - with a friend - over LED colour. He considers me a luddite because I won't embrace them as enthusiastically as he, but my reasons are mostly that up until recently, the so called "white" LEDs were decidedly blue. My eyes tell me and others photos confirmed it.
This bloke lives in a world of blue - blue jeans, blue shirt and his motorhome is decorated mostly in blues and greys - so of course he thinks bluish LEDs are nice and white.
Me? I prefer autumn colours so of course I prefer warm white fluoros, incandescents and hopefully, warm white LEDs.

I still have reservations because they tend to be point sources and very directional and until they design suitable fittings to spread the light, tend to result in a very contrasty overall lighting scheme. Very bright pools of light with dark walls and ceilings - totally contrary to all principles of good lighting. Yes, they might save battery power, but to me the cost is too great so up until now, I choose to go with conventional lighting and install the system to cope with it.
In fact, lighting isn't as much a problem as some make out. Using a computer or watching TV for hours chews through the power pretty well too, and most motorhomes are small enough so that one fluoro will light most of the interior quite well. 2 amps for 4 hours a night is not going to kill a battery without a lot of help from other types of loads.

=========================

As for supposed standards for these type of lighting. With internet sales accounting for ever higher proportion of total sales - and eBay and paypal making it so easy to use - how long will regulatory authorities keep pretending they have any real influence in the type of electrical goods the average consumer uses.

Hi Tony,

I have a mix of both in my van, all replacement for the 10 watt halogen spotlights plus one for the main cabin (35 watt equivalent)

The LED 'warm white' are basically exactly the same colour as the halogens. If your fitting has the halogen bulb inserted at the back of the fitting (as opposed to the side) you have to remove the reflector as well as the bulb. When the LED is fitted, the light is not as directional because of having no reflector. With the side fitting LED's, it is much the same.

I fitted 2 white lights above the kitchen area and my wife prefers these much better. I also fitted 2 of the same in the bathroom, above the wash basin and I prefer them for shaving.

If you want to fit a warm white as a main light in the hab area, my tip is to get an LED with a higher equivalent rating than the halogen. I got one the same but my light shade kills some of the light.
