Are these LED replacement bulbs I have heard about any good? As we are discovering that we prefer Wilding to campsites I am always looking at ways to preserve power. Is there much of a saving (powerwise) to be made and how long do they last. Our Kontiki has two spots at the back, 5 fluorescents in total and three centre roof lounge lights. Oh and some kind of dim light in the luton. Am I right to presume the fluorescents use less power anyway and if not can you get LED replacements for them?

Thought I might just replace the two spots at the back first and see what we thought. Any ideas of where and what to get appreciated.

Thanks

I like Barry am interested in these LED lights i have a hymer 534 where can we get these bulbs from....... i hope i am not opening myself up for Dimmo of the year here and every one else knows where top purchase them... anyway i wait with baited breath as they say

my mate put led lighting in my van for me, 10 spot lights (it's only a little van) - forgot to switch them off over a weekend once and they were still shining brightly three days later!!:D

I bought an 18 LED 'cluster' bulb (MC16) as a replacement for a 10w halogen... the hardest thing was to find a dim/dull bulb as I wanted a background light in the corner of the lounge and bedroom area, rather than the red hot retina burning flood lights already fitted!!!

I settled on a yellow/amber one for the lounge and a red one for the bedroom, these replacements run at just 1.3w rather than 10w, also they are barely warm to the touch. They were bought off ebay quite cheaply. I also bought a 21w replacement car indicator bulb for the awning light which is a 7 LED cluster in a blue/white, again this runs at just 1w.

So that's 42w (over 3amps) of lighting for less than 4w!!!! Which means you can go out leaving a light on inside and the awning light on for a safe return!

If you're doing much 'wilding' in winter with long dark nights I would say replace at LEAST one hot halogen for an LED - there are some 21 & 24 LED cluster that are BRIGHTER than 10w halogens!!!!! for only a couple of watts.

I can run all my lights on LED for less than one Halogen. The light is a bit different but you do get used to it. I did have Halogen at home and removed them can't stand the heat they produce.

Replaced all my bulbs last year for L.E.Ds, a mixture of white and warm bulbs, I even changed the awning lights. Yes they use very little power about 70% less than halogens and they dont burn you when you touch them.

You're so right Rick,
I replaced 20W halogens for 2W LED's clusters. Which gives me 10x more autonomy for, the same amount of light ! And no heat :)

I agree with all thats said, they make a big diference, but beware some of the cheaper ones are not upto much, buy good quality, I had mine from Ultra Leds already mentioned above,

Well I went do two caravan / MH outlets yesterday with my original bulbs in my pocket and of course they are a standard bayonet type fitting whereas the LED ones just have two pins. Can you get LED bulbs with a bayonet fitting or do I now have to replace the light fitting as well?

Regards
BD

You need the 'gu' type not the 'mc' most bayonet are 240v so be careful as to which ones you buy!

whilst fluorescent light consume less power when running the do consume more on startup. I would wire in 12v led holders and use them instead. There are many different types of LED bulbs to choose from, just google to get all the info you need. Quite a few available in Ebay as well. All in all if you are wild camping they are a must.

Yes you can get Bayonet type bulbs, they look a bit weird as they are square with a chip on each side and one on the top. look here to view http://leisurepower.co.uk/acatalog/ledlamps.html they are a bit expensive but i worked out they should last about 300 years of motorhoming:rolleyes::confused:

I have just pulled a halogen bulb from my Auto trail and it says on the side...mr 11+c 12 volt 5 watts..how does that compare with LED's...am I a numpty or what ? it is all above me I am afraid !!!....

mr11 replacement would probably be rated @ 1.5 watts

Hi Salopian,
My halogen bulbs are the same as yours MR 11+c 5w, and replacing them with the LED equivalent, (MR11 LED Warm White Light Bulbs) these are the same dia@35mm, and use only 1w. My purchase is from Globalgadgets on Ebay, cost £17.95 incl P&P for Qty 5. Just replacing the living area ones at the moment, to see the difference in light output.

Happy Camping:)
and good to see you back. Are you going to Hayfield?

Many thanks for that !! Now I have to get my head around using E-Bay !!

Hi Salopian,
my bulbs arrived, fitted them and pleased. They give off a nice warm glow light, very cosy. I have also ordered a couple of replacement led bulbs for the bathroom to check on light quality, the old ones are the 10w capsule 2 pin type and having qty6 in a small space can use a lot of power, hoping to save in the region of 48w, these also purchased from globalgadgets. Let you know what I think on arrival.

Happy Camping:)
