Leaving Van

Hi all,

Just a quick question, what's the general concensus as far as leaving the van for a few hours to go for a walk? Blinds open and everything tidied away so people can see that there's nothing worth stealing? or blinds down so nobody can tell if you're in there or not?. Parked alongside a van a few weeks ago in the Elan valley which had all the blinds down and I couldn't tell if it was empty or not!!!

Hi brettandsandra and welcome to the site,

Both methods are probably used when leaving the van. We are in the middle, so to speak. We raise the blinds halfway so nobody can see in but do not know for certain if the van is occupied. If your blinds slide down to close, then you are snookered.:(

Put a sign in one window saying beware of the dog and leave a HUGE cheap plastic dog bowl just outside of the habitation door. If you can pick up a very large dog lead and collar, leave it in view somewhere. Preferably a collar with spikes in.

We leave the blinds open but always leave the fly screens closed and as maingate said we have a nice sticker with a German Shepherd dog on it saying I live here.

Why are you a felon or a scrot looking to do a quick job?:eek::eek:

There's them as would love to know the answer to that question.:D:D:D

Us? We just hope that should someone enter without invitation that they realise that we is poor folks and leave us a few squids for a slap up meal on leaving.

That is if baby lets them

PS We were in the Elan Valley around then great place to go wilding.

Thats a good idea....leaving a pic, bowl & studded lead.

along with a couple of warped pics in visible through the window...so they know I'm barking too!

i did hear a rumour that if you put a pic of maingate on a side window its enough to frighten even the most hardened criminal. only hears say though.

Its true,i have met him and can vouch that that is correct:D

Although i am no criminal.lol

Hey coolasluck and vwalan,

I will have you know that I once came third in a male beauty contest.

Charles Bronson won it and the Elephant Man was second.

I am sure I should have got second place.

I leave blinds about 3 inches from fully up .. fly screen down ... and cab curtain pulled ... as though we're having a siesta ... which we often are (we are semi nocturnal).

My reasoning is that any camper will have something worth stealing in it ... so making it unclear wether someone is inside is the only defence.

we do have a dog so I will add the lead and water bowl trick too ;) though we have been known to leave her in the passenger seat guarding the van in some of the dodgier places we visit.

blinds up or down

good idea about the bowls out side. when abroad most people leave the blinds up and it do's work because you don't no if they are resting after a long drive and put a sign of beware of the dog be safe out there

hi maingate ,i actually have a pic from when i was a child and i came first in a baby competition. unfortunately i now win father xmas prizes .normally have longish white hair and beard . but still good looking .i think. never mind i,m still growing but outwards now . ha ha . i can always go on a diet .some will always be ugly ,my dad allways told me that.

Always try to park with the habitation door in a prominent position, in view! if your not going to be too long leave the radio on. I reckon most M/H thefts are stalked! they watch and wait!

Leaving motorhome

Rockinjak,I think your right there, many motorhomers ,dont think of who or what is going on around them, and i dont mean a 10 metre radius,There are oportunist thieves about, and if they see you both leaving and sometimes to take the dog for a walk they can be in and out, when your out of view.
Take it in turns to take the dog out, make sure there's no-one at least under 25 lurking about, leave dog in plain view ( dont forgt to leave window slightly down and roof lights open and yes a good tip is dog stickers and a radio on,but dont forget some a real cheeky beggars and will make a noise or even knock on the van,to see if there IS a dog or someone in it !
Dont leave van for long,or keep it in sight, take it with you as much as you can, dont rely on other motorhomers, especially when abroad, dont leave it at dusk/dark.

We always leave screens up and silver screens fitted, at night leave a light on with screens not quite fully up and sometimes leave radio on (Radio 4 is good as there's often talking rather than music on) sounds like people inside. But I'm sure some cheeky buggers would just knock on the door with a lame excuse and see if anyone answers!

It really is a concern where you park these days, if in an area you don't know take a walk round the carpark and check for broken toughened glass on the ground... if there is ANY beware!

We have a safe fitted in a prominent position... so now the question is do you use it as it's safe... or do you hide your money and passports elsewhere hoping if they break in they will try and nick the safe?? Answers on a postcard please!

Preferably well chewed!

Also had a tip off a Norwegian camper in Spain, he said to leave an old pair of shoes/sandals outside the door, you can tie a bit of chord to stop the odd dog taking them . With the blinds partially closed they can't see in easily.

I like the radio idea, but our "clever" radio turns itself off after 15 minutes if the key's out, probably to stop you inadvertently draining the battery.

blinds down portable battery radio on
are we in ???????
hopfully thet who want to steal will think we are
