LDV parts needed - urgent

Derbyshire

Hello peeps,

I plea for help. The head gasket on our LDV camper has gone pop. The head's off and it's fubard so we need to find a new/used one to replace it.

We've tried all the contacts we know of but nobody has anything in.

If anyone knows of any breakers/parts suppliers who may have something in stock, could they please let me know ASAP.

It's an LDV Convoy 400, engine is 2.5TD of the Peugeot variety.

Any help would be much appreciated as I don't like having a dead camper! :(

think you will find if you take the head gasket into a good parts store they will match it up with the peugot gasket. i know the ford engine one is like the transit.

The gasket's gone in the bin. It's a new head we need to source and apparently there aren't many of them about!

cant help there . sounds like engine conversion time. cant you find a peugot engine withe same bellhousing fittings . i know friends have swapped the smaller sherpa for others in the peugot range. the 200 pilot not the 400 convoy. must be possible.

Not sure but it might be something we have to investigate if we can't track down another head. Very irritating!

couple of ideas 1 is there is an ldv /sherpa owners club google it and it will take you to the site ,they are about the best peeps to ask . or 2 an engine change .with mabey a transit 2.5 diesel the did fit them in the later model ldv , i dont know whats involved to put one in yours but i am shure the club will inform you . i have also been ringing around a few friends i still have in the trade up in leeds one a very good peugeot citroen guy in wortly called apt motors .and he cannot help as he said parts for your type of van are getting rather thin on the ground sorry . and also some contacts i have in barnsley where i used to live , and to tell you the truth they said a head is going to be hard to come by too .i do hope the club can help you ,but they are going to be the best to talk to

think if you go the transit way the g.box may have to be changed . only guessing though. but yes ask a club . must be one i should think.
or look for a cheap van runner and canabalise it.

No replies from the club yet. Started asking questions on Sunday when it happened.

Wortley? small world.....I used to live there!

Engine conversion might be the way to go but at the moment we can't afford it as I'm not working. So, it's doubly annoying! Cheapest complete engine we've found costs half the cost of what we paid for the van complete!

with scrap doing £200 a ton ? a motor with a bit of rubbish chucked in is doing £350 at the scrap yard :scared: not many are finding their way into breakers yards now.
unless you are doing the repairs your self another van could work out as cheap taking the scrap price of yours into the equation

To fit the transit engine you'd need the engine mounts, gearbox, possibly propshaft/axle/ wiring loom

well i tried a load of scrappies in barnsley and leeds that i know and the answer was no chance of an engine or a head sounds as if they are realy hard to come by . i am going to have a word with a mate of mine he can usualy come up with a hard to come by part .as there are quite a few breakers down here that have hard to come by parts in . just an idea what is wrong with the original head as sometimes you can get them repaired

Thanks for the all the replies.

Old_Arthur - I agree. Nobody wants these bits hanging around when they can make more money from them by weighing them in. Buying a runner might be an option but we don't have the room to store another van!

Davymk2 - I suspected we'd need the wiring loom to convert to a Tranny engine. Might still be an option we need to look into.

Mandrake - thanks for checking with your contacts. That's great. We had a similar problem getting parts for our old van (Toyota Hiace). Turns out they only made that model for about 3-4 years and could we heckers get 2nd hand parts for it! Seems we've managed to do the same again with the Peugeot engined variety of LDV! Doh!!

Head gasket blew on Sunday. Suspect it's probably be going a while. Head's off an it's obvious it's been run at some point in its life without the required amount of anti-freeze (if at all). The head's very badly corroded and also cracked near all 4 pistons. The guy we bought it from has a fleet of LDV mini buses. Hubby spoke to him yesterday and he said they've tried to repair them in the past but it doesn't work! If it has boiled over (like it did on Sunday) then odds are that the head's warped anyway!

The head can be re-skimmed try looking in autotrader for places that do it
