hi all
were off around france and spain for 7 weeks from the 12th july
and was wondering what is the best way to run the lap top and phone
i have a i phone and have been warned about roaming charges or something its a pay as you go phone ?
also whats the best way to get internet conection over there
do i just hope for free wifi or is there a dongle or something i can get for a month ?

I live in germany and you can get pay as you go dongles for about €20 euros a month with a speed of 3 mb/s or so which is adequate, so i imagine that spain and france have the same thing so find a vodaphone or o2 shop in france or spain ( or equivalant) and ask they should have such things.

Get an unlocked dongle go to carrefour with your passport by a pay as you go card here in spain 19 euros then top it up when needed

Sim card

Unfortunately a seperate sim card purchased in each country is the cheapest way but if you don't use much data may be maxroam or similar international sim could be of use
Enjoy your travels

hi thanks alot
so im best just taking my phone and laptop and then just asking for dongle like you say
and the same with a sim card from over there
hopefully will be touring france and spain for 6 weeks hopefully should see some nice places
as its our first time aswell

If you stop at the first carrfour in France you come to and ask them for a pay as you go internet card and ask the if they still do the one for the two country one. i not sure if the still do it.

will do thanks again
if not will be after free wifi for the laptop
and just use the phone for pics

Have a great time in France - there is quite a lot of info on this Forum about getting internet abroad. Its not quite as easy as it sounds. I am only saying what I have read

I have an iPhone under a sim only contract with Vodafone. When I go abroad I use their Vodafone Data Traveller package which for £10 a month allows me to use the internet on the phone anywhere in Europe. Its brilliant as it always gets a good signal as its not tied into one particular provider, it just picks up the best available signal where you are. You get 25MB a day which on a smart phone is more than enough and I also use a free app called Opera Mini browser which compresses all the sites, makes them load faster and stretches out the 25MB considerably. Vodafone Data Traveller is available on PAYG but its £2 for the 25MB on each day you use it so contract works out loads cheaper.

For the laptop I use one of the Directional wifi antennas from these guys Motorhome WiFi | Improving Wireless Range for Caravans and Campervans and its excellent. You can pick up signals from miles around so often I dont need to go hunting for a McDonalds. I always get online with either the phone are the antenna.
