Land owners

Hi All,
Irenerobbie said;
i cann't see a few motorhomes being put in the same category as travellers encampments but i have met the "get off my land" types who seem to want to chase everyone away good ,bad or anything in between

I have met some land owners from time to time who have questioned what we were doing, and in a quiet and relaxed manner explained exactly.
Emphasising that we weren't causing any damage or causing hurt to any one or anything, and the fact that it would be cleaner after we left than when we arrived.
Then the small talk, weather etc. Just what supposedly (normal people) would talk about from day to day.

Maybe I've just been lucky, but they all wished us a good stay and hoped we enjoyed our holiday.
Hey, politeness doesn't cost anything.

With friendly greetings,
Ian

can you explain in what circumstances you met them.
it intrigues me as most private land I have seen in the UK is fenced.
I have this pic in my head of you pulling into a field and then calmly chatting to the owner/farmer.
I have heard of instances where someone was in a layby and some local m**** just told them to move.
I think that any land bought by public money ie roads laybys and forrestry etc, should be available to us to use but can't envisage a private owner being so enlightened to allow anyone to use his land.
I know the Flemings do at Black mount [A82] and i know one at Killin that allows you to use if you phone for permission but those are the only 2 instances i have come across

Hi Roi,
It was up in the Montrose area and looked like common land with nice woodland etc. We were out for a walk on the Sunday morning after we camped on the Saturday night, when we met these 2 old ladies who informed us it was their land.
I spoke to them for about half an hour and it didn't hurt. Afterwards they invited us to stay for as long as we wished, but not wishing to take advantage of them we only stayed another night.
I'm sure it created a good impression on them.
They did tell me their names at the time but I just can't remember.

Another time we were down the east coast we were camped on a bit of what we thought was old road near a half dozen bee hives. When the bee keepers arrived the next morning they challenged us and I offerred them to take the night back (ha ha) again explaining there would be no damage to anything or anyone. Upon which they suggested that the bees might come into our van. I'm sure they thought that would scare us, but said we would take the risk and did they really think that we were hurting them. They reluctantly agreed we we'n't.
But as I thought they obviously didn't own the land.

An old friend of the family actually camped wild with a car & caravan for a fortnight at a well known tourist resort at a Loch and when challenged he said he would not move unless they produced legal documentation. (nuff said)

With friendly greetings,
Ian

so no talking down an irate farmewr with a shotgun then. :(

we had one incident in france when we had alternator trouble. the adjuster bracket broke about 7pm when we heading for the ferry to come home.
As we pulled onto the hard shoulder we managed to pick up a HUUUUGGEE bolt in the tyre. I tried to fix the bracket [2 washers and nut and bolt temp repair] but no go
so we pulled off the A R [near Lille] We ended up in the [large] entrance to a couple of fields and I cooked dinner and we had a pleasant evening waving to a few French who passed giving us very strange looks.
Next am we were woken at 7.30 by the farmer dumping rubble from a great height into an empty truck right beside us.
Once we explained we were broken and needed a mechanie he could not have been more helpful [maybe to get rid of us, he might have heard about brit travellers lol] and he raced off and came back with a recovery truck from the village.

any one want the rest of the story???

at the end of the day trespass is not a criminal offence, so the worst u can get is lead up ur *rse or dont do that again my boy:confused:
