Currently still on the grand uk tour and up in the Scottish Islands but I am considering a couple of weeks in the lake district on the way home maybe mid September.

Has anyone been recently or going soon? Is it completely rammed and is wilding still banned? I know it's always been a bit iffy but last year I know they were kicking people out of the park at all hours. I don't mind using sites or cls if I have to but I would rather avoid it if it's going to be dead busy. Ullswater is only 45 min from my house anyway.

Was there a month ago, very busy, glad I wasn’t trying to find wild spots. A lot of former spots seem to have gained signs, even in the once quieter northern parts. Despite Cumbria Tourism’s laudable effort to establish a coastal touring route to take the heat off the centre, more signs put up up by parish councils (of questionable legitimacy) have been appearing. There’s still a few car parks in the coastal area where we are just about tolerated. Quite a lot of Pubstops but you won’t find many on Cumbria’s Vanlife website. Many of these and most small CL sites didn’t want to be included for fear of being overwhelmed.

If you join the Cumbria 200 Facebook group you’ll find a map of what’s available.

We were there for a long weekend at the end of July meeting up with some old friends. Short stop options - try ringing the Trout Hotel in Cockermouth, they were more than agreeable to the old have a meal, stay in the car park swap. The barrier going in opens automatically (pressure pad). Very quiet night.

In Derwent, the pay and display car park (furthest from the centre - overspill pay & display) was a good overnight for £5 I think, larger spaces marked out right at the back of the car park, arrive after 6pm and most of the cars have gone. Another couple of quiet stops.

The whole of the Lakes were rammed then, but not sure if that still is the case. Mostly sensible distancing etc.

Thanks for the info. Still undecided. Bad news to hear about the increase signs. We always liked wilding around crummock water or the Honister pass but I wouldn't be surprised if they have gone now.

I guess one thing I might do is ring round the CL sites and see what they have mid September. If they are all full that might suggest it's a bad idea.
