when we purchased our m/h last year we were suprised to be handed the spare wheel and informed that we would need to buy a special bracket to hold the wheel to the underside of our van, our dealer said it could cost up to £7-800 supply and fit, has anyone encountered the same problem, if so i would like to know your comments on this one. many thanks

Me thinks you should have told them were to stick their motorhome, I would have had a word with Trading standards if it was me.:D
So where do you keep it now??

At the momment in the garage, and hope we don`t get a flatty!!!

Hi Rodders,

A lot of coachbuilts with underslung spare wheels can be a right carry on to remove from the frame. If you can keep it elsewhere, then I would do that.

You did not say if yours is on an ALKO chassis. If it is not and you want to put it underneath, take some measurements ( there should be pre drilled holes) and get down to a scrapyard. Look at Fiat and Iveco panel vans to see if their frame will fit.

I had no spare with mine but sourced one. A 215/75 16" spare weighs a ton. I am not putting it underneath but I have plenty of storage space.

You see old models are best My Talbot Express (swift kontiki) has the spare under the bonnet.:):)

Same here, old Talbot Express ( Elddis Autostratus ), spare under the bonnet. If they could do that then, why can't they do it now.

How is it we're happy to be conned into paying tens or hundreds of thousands on new motorhomes and they don't come with a spare wheel, which you would get if you bought the basic van.

How many people would buy new cars if a spare wheel was not included.

It seems lots ...Mini's at least come with no spare wheel and all you get is a can of blow up stuff to get you home ( totally useless if the puncture is to the sidewall).

Mercedes BMW Mazda all adopt the same tact on some of their models.

This situation with the car manufacturers is at least 9 years old.

Having read the OP's original thread I had assumed that the LCV market had gone the same way.

Mind you, how many drivers actually know how to change a wheel now?? I would make it a compulsory part of the driving test.

It amazes me the number of drivers out there who don't even know where their bonnet release is.

Hi Rodders, I to purchased two motorhomes, a Bessacarr, and Dethleffs, both tandem axels, with no spare wheels. It seems that a lot of new M/homes are going this way as you rarely get a puncture. Membership to a breakdown service was the advise given when buying. So I argued and got a new wheel and tyre as well as the inflator kit provided in both the vehicles. I don't bother to carry the spare now, which reduces weight, and gives me more room. Only had one puncture ever in my motor homes. As for the carrier I made my own out of 10 mm bar which fitted underneath the rear of the Bessacarr. Beware drilling holes in the chassis to fit it may void your warranty. Hope this is of help.
