A friend of mine asked what I thought of one of these
Leo Specialist Vehicles | Kinder Scout | Sports Utility Camper Van
I had never heard of this one, he seemed to be attracted by the relatively low price for a new van of just under £40k. Has anyone seen or used one?
Based on the website description my comments are as follows, but it would be interesting to hear other views....
<<I had a look online yesterday and found it. Seems to be this firms first attempt at a campervan. They are branching out from disabled and special purpose minibuses.

It seems to be more of a ‘Campervan’ aimed at young active cyclists and suchlike, enabling those with expensive bikes to carry them inside away from the slippery fingers of the ungodly. Compared with most motorhomes its fitout is somewhat basic. Only a 2 burner job. No oven, limited cupboard space, most of the goodies are extras, the inclusion of which would significantly raise the price. It isn’t really fully autonomous; most motorhomes incorporate a cassette toilet washbasin and shower, this only offers a portable toilet...as another extra. I would think it is more suitable for weekenders or use on campsites rather than long term camping off-grid, or in motorhome ‘aires’ or carparks, or Wildcamping. For its limited spec it isn’t particularly cheap. Full spec ‘proper’ motorhomes start new at around £42-43k, with bathroom, oven, grill, 3/4 burner, hob, fridge and microwave and more storage space. You can get a good hardly used decent secondhand 2 berth motorhome with about 10k miles on the clock a couple of years old for the same money or less. It largely depends of course on how you want to use it. In your position I would spend some time looking at alternatives before parting with that sort of money.>>

I think your summing up is about right, it's built around very specific needs and this makes it not very suitable for most users.

Try comparing it with other campervans instead of with motorhomes.

It has everything an Autosleeper Trooper has but more space so better sleeping arrangements for 4 people and room to carry any leisure equipment inside rather than on the back. They've stopped making it now but the RRP used to be nearer 50K than 40K

Lack of a shower isn't necessarily a problem, particularly for families that use sites.

I've had my Trooper for 3 years and done a few long trips in it - twice had a month in Scotland going up to Orkney and back, plus a 3 + week trip round France. I don't use sites very much. If I was younger and fitter I would probably have stuck with it, but at my age I need a few more home comforts.

They could have hid a portable loo and called it a Kinder surprise.:lol-049::lol-049:

If I was young and fit I think I would quite like that for as they say ‘action weekends’. PV campers I have seen (which are very few) always seem a bit too cramped for me as I compare them to what I can do in our motorhome. I know that is only right for my personal use though and not a universal comparison.

This does exactly what it was designed for without compromise, folks going in the wild climbing a mountain or dirt riding miles are not interested in toilets and showers, they will use a bush. When they want more they will book a site and use facilities. I can see how this would work well for that and sleeping space is brilliant.

If your friend wants it for more than action type breaks though I would point him at others, last time I looked the Adria Twin started at £38k although they only sleep 3

Not unlike my T5 which suits us fine for wilding all over Scotland for weeks at a time. You don’t need a cramped toilet shower room to wild. We have a porta potty in a cupboard and lots of places you can shower without going to a camp site. I would say that van is better suited to wilding than a flimsy white box. IMO.
