help kathrein ufd 170 satallite system

try working out how to get tv on 1st time yesterday, using manual downloaded on-line kept getting alternate message on tv screen a) low battery power b) overload dish on roof went up after receiver first switched on and then park for no apparent reason. checked monitor panel leisure battery is indicated 13,2V Can anyone advise or help.
thanks for reading

Hi I can't give you specific help but with our self seeking satalite after the dish goes up it won't seek until the satalite tuner is turned on.

Also our sat dish is wired into the van battery so that it retracts automatically when the van is started this is not a problem as it uses no power when in position but if your sat receiver is also wired into the van then your van battery might be low.

not knowing a lot regarding batteries is my batteries low showing 13.2V on monitor panel???

Your sat system might be attached to your other battery which may not be the one the meter is showing :)

Voltage shown on voltmeter Guestimate of battery condition
12.7v or higher Fully charged
12.5v Three quarters charged
12.4v Half charged
12.2v A quarter charged
12v or lower Empty

i have 3 batteries one in the engine bay 1 under each of the seats. i think the ones under seats are leisure batteries and asume they are joined up (is this right as it does not make sense to me that the panel does not monitor both??? , if not, How do I find oput if they are linked up) from your figures it looks like battery/batteries is/are fully charged.

Have you read the manual: http://www.kathrein.de/en/sat/products/doc/9362705b.pdf

Assume nothing :)

But yes I would assume that the 2 under the seats are leisure batterys which I would expect should be wired in parralel to give you 2x the capacity. But then thats making assumptions. Perhaps they are seperate and you need to switch them over in some way..

TBH the only way to sort this is to so as people say on this site and take your time doing some diagnostics.

First thing buy yourself an electrical meter for about £10 from maplins. test each of the 3 batterys to see what the voltage output is from each. I suspect you might have a knackered leisure battery that is drawing power away from the other. If you do need to replace one it should be the same size as the other. ie you need to have 2x110 not 1x110 and 1x80 amps

If thats not the problemo
Then I would disconnect each battery in turn and check when your van meter looses its reading and also when your sat system stops working.

Then I would reconnect the engine battery, see what if anyhting has current, should only be the engine but if you have a switching system perhaps you can run your leisure circuit from the engine battery. We can do this with ours but of course never do but its nice to know in an emergency we could. As said some self seaking satalites are wired into the engine circuit as they have to retract automatically when the engine starts

Next I would try to work out which of the 2 leisure batterys is the master ie which is connected directly to the leisure circuit, reconnect this. See what has power and check the voltage at the terminals. Then start the engine, when you check the voltage at the terminals again it should be higher showing that you are getting a charge from the engine.

Next connect the other battery and do likewise. Again with the engine running if its been connected correctly you should get a higher reading at the terminals. if not then perhaps there is a wiring fault.

:)
Good luck

thanks for the detailed instruction will get a meter asap planing to do that already, (need to learn how to use it) also need to remove seats to get to battery area is that an easy job?? does the whole seat plus base plate needs to be detached and removed in that case i wound have problem in finding an area to place the seat Just dried cleaned all the covers and fabrics Not really want to mess it up Mrs will be mad but if that is the case then supose i will cover everything first. advise how to remove seat appreciated thanks

Are you having trouble with any other electrics, or is it just the satellite system?

If everything else is working OK it sounds like there is possibly a bad connection in the feed to the sat box. Although the error messages you get are not quite the same as those in the manual they do indicate that the problem is low voltage to the sat box.

As biggirafe says, you need to get yourself a cheap digital meter, then you can go round and check voltages. What I would do is to measure the voltage at one of the 12v sockets with nothing else switched on, that way you will know what your leisure battery is supplying. It should be showing around 12.6v (more if the battery is being charged).

Then turn on your sat system and see what happens to the voltage reading, if it drops below 12v then either your battery is flat/faulty or you have a bad connection, most likely at the battery, connector block, or fuses. If the reading is stable, or only drops a little, then the problem is likely to be in the 12v supply to the sat box. You'll need to trace the wiring and check for bad connections at any connectors or fuse.
