just a thought does anyone now of a way of securing the plastic windows.it seems so easy for a would be thief to put a screwdriver in and pop the latches ?

Hi Frosty,
I met a chap who glued an alu U-profile to the window and another one
matching on the van. Impossible to put a screwdriver in between.
However for myself I never put it on (too lazy )

Yes frostybow, I have thought the same thing, we go to great lenths with the doors....alarms, locks, bolts, straps across the doors, the list goes on. Surely its the windows that are the weak points

Sorry bmb1uk, I'm just bustin to know........is this the wife or the rotwiler (can't spell that but you know what I mean)

I've always thought the more obvious security you add the more you advertise that you have things worth stealing. You may also increase the damage caused if someone trys to breakin.

A profesional thief is going to get past any security measures you put in place, The best alarms don't stop a determined profesional thief they only stop a casual opportunist thief.

'Be careful not paranoid', Just my opinion of course :)

I agree with some of what you say but an opportunist thief will target the easiest van to get into and out of in the shortest time possible with the least noise possible

If a thief is going to get in a camper van hes more likely to go in through the front doors as they are just the same as a standard van so hes likely to knnow the weakness on them doors..even the new renault and transit vans can be opened in less than 30 seconds with little or no noise.better off spending a bit of money on better aftermarket alarm than the standard one's.

I have just fitted deadlocks to my cab doors. Only takes a few minutes.

It cost me over £500 for a Cat 1 Thatcham approved alarm on my last van. On this one, I intend to mix and match different security features and make up my own alarm as the layout of this one is very different with numerous locker doors and big garage door. It already has 2 Fiamma locks on the habitation door and garage door.

Why do we seem to get ripped off financially in this country?

Absolutley, not being over the top does not mean no security at all :)

I have 2 red flashing lights one in the cab and one over the habitation door. There may or may not be an alarm connected to the lights but a casual theif is not going to try and find out.

Also a Fiamma habitation door lock, The dog sticker was added recently, we don't have a dog :) In france we will also leave dogs water bowl outside at night and when we leave the van.

Also we use a strop on the front door with a couple of lock covers which prevent the locks coming up if the someone trys to force the lock

I think these are the work of a genius as they cost pennys and a numpty could fit them. Sorry AJS I can't find where they can be obtained :(

So we are security concious but I prefer the cheap options. If you can afford to spend £500+ on alarm systems then of course you can do that. But if you are spending more than the worth of the things you are protecting it seems to me that the only people winning are the insurance companys and the alarm suppliers.

This is only my own opinion of course and everyone should do what they can afford and what suits them.

someone did at one time or other tell me what a tools was but i think i took the alternative meaning

OK ...so you can't recall where you had them from then.... hummmm

I use a cat.1 alarm and chain between both front door and a fiamma lock on the side door plus lock and chain through the spare wheel, but the bandits still tried to get in whilst we were asleep parked in between lorrys on atruckstop near the italian border. The chain stopped entry.
This was the first attack in 7 years
Puff.

I like the automatic awning light as a security device, comes on as you approach the van, thieves don't like light as they get seen .You could wire a bleeper to this as well but would need an isolation switch for some conditions.:):):)

Yes thats why we were sat in the dark last night ;)
I've had a look at the lock covers and they are made by Fiamma but they are no longer on their web site. I expect more modern vans don't have the buttons so they have stopped making them. Maybe fleebay?

Why not just tape two pieces of black conduit together, poke it out of the side window and say GO AWAY YOU NASTY PERSON.
Unless its AJ, then just pull the trigger.
Cheers, Pete.
We must stop picking on AJ, he cant help it......God, what am I saying, I think I need to lay down for a while.
