That is the extent of my french. Off to the France in July, I have approx 6 weeks to gain a basic vocabulary.

Do anybody know of any websites where I can download a mp3 so I can listen on my phone etc.

Thanks in advance.

Years ago while in France met a couple of english guys on a campsite, we gave them a lift to the local hypermarket-couldn't get rid after that!

Well they did ho so very English thing of speaking english slower and louder, with a french 'Allo 'Allo! accent to the locals. We wanted to curl up and die with shame. No they were not taking the piss-they did it all the time, they really thought they were speaking french!

i got by with school french, and just brushed up on the really needed. How to order coffee and beers, numbers etc. It would be simples now as hubbie's ex is french so he's v good at the old lingo-you can take him with you? he can argue in french, swear and everything!

Funnily enough, people(mainly friends and family) say I have more than a passing resemblence(arrrggh how do you spell!) to that french copper who was really a brit in a cunning disguise. So the plan was to copy him

Try this, there's a series of them in different languages.

The Italian was very helpful when we went to Venice.

Whatever country we go to, we always memorise "Please" & "Thankyou". Goes a long way, even if you can't say anything else:D

Also, she who must be obeyed has been known to speak French to some Germans in Spain:eek:, who fortunately spoke English:), anyway it all got sorted out in the end:confused:. Moral of the story, don't drive through too many countries to quickly!!

I am hoping if I do bumped into any foreign types  they be Germans as I spent 6 years there and I can conserve with resorting to mentioning the war  But seriously folks, you are quite right, a little effort goes a long way....but I suspect not in France!?! Sorry for resorting to sterotypes and of course the foreign types on this type are friendly, charming and very helpful :D

Best thing my French teacher learnt me was 'Je voudrais ca, sil vous plait' and point (I would like that please)

Exactly, was just about to say, lesson number 1 :

"Bonjour, j'aimerais (same as je voudrais) + point at thing + s'il-vous-plait"

:D

Ca (normally with little cedille under but don't know how to get it on computer) is pronounced "sa".

Lesson number 2 then, since BedfordMJ beat me to it :p

In a restaurant for example, to say you don't want mushroom on your pizza (or the likes) :

"Pas de + word/or point + s'il-vous-plait"

Mushroom = champignon btw.

So pronounce : PA DE SHAMPEENYO, SEAL VOO PLAY.

I'm French, ask away, and lesson number 3 coming soon, u better learn them ones in the meantime, there'll be a test. ;)
(am teacher too, hard to step out of character).

As regards internet, you know what's actually quite good ? YouTube. Lots of mini-clips with different vocab topics like food, parts of the body, and bits of talking. Just search for French, or French learning.
