Italy - Winter Warmth

Dorset Diver

Guest
My wife and I are keen to spend a couple of months away (Feb/Mar 2012) to set some winter warmth and we would like to go to Italy. Unfortunately we have not been able to find any sites open at that time of the year, let alone wild camping areas. Can anyone suggest some good places?

Kind regards

hi. my experiance of oitaly at that time of year is there is nt much warmth there. you also have ato drive through some cold areas in the north to even get a bit warm. italy turkey ,greece all are abit on the chilly side. having done italy etc several times in the past i usually just head to maroc .its definately hot there. tunisia is also cold. take a look on a good atlas look at latitude- longatude i says it all.maybe warmer than here but still chilly.cheers alan

Italy is a big country - at the time of year you are thinking about the north will still be quite chilly but the south can be very warm. A few years back we over-wintered on Sicily and had a great time (it is also quite convenient for nipping over to Tunisia for a while). The campsites on Sicily and the adjacent mainland were open all year and there were many opportunities for wilding.

Sicily would be the place to go, but even there it can be cold in February. We have friends who live there and they say that the temperatures are quite variable, one year it can be quite mild but sometimes they get snow in the winter.

if warmth is what you want , anywhere in italy is anti percentage ; I once took the ferry from greece to escape the snow [ got snowed in ] , it was much the same in italy , but if you could manage march april I was say go for it ; having said that the algarve was delightful feb/march this year

just have a look at the european weather records , SE spain is the best place

all depends what is important to you , somewhere new or somewhere warm

Got back 5 weeks ago from 15 weeks mainly in the south of Italy including Sicily.
Sicily was fairly mild and no problems wilding though some sites are open. Plenty of Germans wintering there. Mostly sunny days and apart from Etna night temperatures above zero Probably not as warm as say Portugal but less crowded.

Also went right round the bottom of Italy and came back up through Puglia and whilst we had some days with a bitterly cold wind and also some heavy rain but also lots of warm sun and temperatures at night remained above zero. Most nights we wild camped and rarely had to share our spots.

If you want warmth (heat) for under £2000 you can go to Goa for a solid 3/4 months, flights included and live a life of Riley, No cooking, eat out for Breakfast, Lunch on the beach and your Evening meal also on the beach under the stars. No washing or ironing, all done by your Landlady. Plus, it is an experience. That is what I do anyway.

there are lots of beach side huts etc in goa . i miss the camper . you can drive but its a few more miles than maroc. just follow the silk road. lots do do it every year.

Last year we went to Portugal for a month, the whole of February, for £700.00 for a studio apartment, flights and transfers included, the weather was great even though the hotel staff said it was the coldest Winter for 13 years, the only thing is....we didn't see much of France, Spain or Portugal from 30,000 feet, that's where motor caravanning scores.

Hi Fofeg, for European standards, £700 is not bad for a month on holiday. Was that including your 3 main meals a day, Breakfast, Lunch and Evening meal, plus, any extras as a drink/drinks at the cafes, If yes, then you have done well.

Actually, we were planning to go to Goa not Portugal, I had flights and accommodation arranged, but my wife read a thread on the Trip Advisor Goa forum where the OP said there was a rat running around a restaurant but it was OK because a waiter chased it around and kicked it out of the door...that put the Top Hat on my Goa plans.

I fully understand your reasons for cancelling your trip to Goa. Sure, there are rats running around, mangy dogs on the street and even buffalos and cows on the beaches. That is the experience and the thrill of visiting the Countries of the world, rich or poor. Goa is one long beach, from North to South. Poor as they may be, they always have a smile on their faces and the greatest respect for others. The village of Benaulim where I usually stay, 80º are British, the rest, Germans, French and Russians. Your stay in Goa is what you make it. Try it, if you don't like it, you need not go back again. I myself would rather be there during the British winter in 28º+

For Winter Sun I'd go for Florida, civilised, no language problems , everything reasonably priced, not too long a flight, not going to get blown to Kingdom come in a restaurant, etc.. In fact, for some years, we used to spend the whole of February each year there, near Tampa, staying with my brother, an American Citizen, but he passed away two years ago.

Not a bad choice Fofeg. As long as you are happy and enjoy yourself, then good for you. I hope you have a great time this summer, where ever you are.

BTW, when I was planning our trip to Goa were recommended this accommodation by some people who stay there every year, but for the life of me I can't remember which town or part of Goa it was in. Anyway, here's part of an email I got from Arnold Mascarehnas, the Monte Villa guest house owner, dated 27/07/09:

EDIT: I think it's in Candolim.

EDIT Again: Just found this website - http://devilonwheels.com/index.php/monte-villa-guest-house-candolim-beach-goa-hotel-review/

Candolim is on the North side of Goa. Mostly the under 40's go in that direction as it is a Party, boozing and bird pulling area. Of course there are nicer places as well. The Russians seem to have taken over in the last couple of years..
I go to the South side where it is quieter and most peaceful. and a lot cheaper. You can pay as much as Rs:10000 for a day for a room in some hotels. South side is max Rs:1500 for a full apartment and air conditioned, Standard is around Rs:200 to 500 a day. You pay your money and you take a choice. I know of at least 50 couples (Brits) you have paid for a full year's rent and stay for 6 months in the year. They just lock up when they return to England.
The point I am trying to malke about Goa is that I go there strictly for the warmth.
