Italina Wildcamping

Hi
last year we spent a few days in Italy en route from Austria to France. Went through the Dolomites and then on to Lake Garda, then from there out towards the west and Switzerland.

There were a lot of good cheap MH campsites in the Dolomites, and on the way down Lake Garda (at a place called Limone) came across a wonderful cheap campsite right on the lakes edge.

Wildcamping is frowned on in the mountains, but to make up for this the Italian have a lot of MH friendly campsites.

I would get through northern Italy as quickly as you can - not a pretty place, but the rest is wonderful.

One final thing, the Dolmites can be a bit hairy!!!

!

Pretty much my sentiments having visited 2008.

TBH I found Garda a bit of a pain in that you want to take a picture and yet have to drive a further mile to pull over and the opportunity is gone.

I got fed up in the end and went back to France.

Of course it is only my perception, and I must have been unlucky, a lot of people rave about Italy.

I agree with you about the picture thing on Lake Garda. It was a bit frustrating and we gave up in the end. But the stop over was glorious. Managed to get the MH within three feet of the water without falling in!

The road alongside the lake is hairy as hell - cannot take your eyes off the road for a second to admire the view - well not without scaring the wits out of the lesser mortals coming the other way. Interesting though.

I drove up one side and back down the other, I must admit the tunnels I found very disorientating, and was actually a far from enjoyable experience.

That said I would love to go back and do it on the motorbike one day.

I am told by a few people that the south is a far better bet in Italy, People are more friendly and things are far more relaxed. I guess that is order of the day for most folk when holidaying.

Had a 6 week trip to Italy Oct/Nov 2005.

Whizzed through northern Italy. Got fed up with the urban sprawl and took to the hills. Went right down south and when I next go to Italy it will be Motorway to get to Calabria as fast as possible.

Can't agree with Boltonlad about wildcamping in the mountains. We had 45 days with only 4 on campsites. Never asked why we were wilding.

Didn't get to the coast until Calabria. Found the best way to find places near the beach was to stop at the first parking place and cycle round the area. Found a sosta that way that I haven't seen listed anywhere, It's at Ardore Marina on the on the Ionian Sea coast. A 25 metre walk to the beach where I would be the only person swimming in early November.

Some strange goings on in the deep south. One spot just behind a belt of pines bordering the beach had vehicles arriving in the early morning. The occupants sat on the beach around a fire in an old oil drum. Think they may have been waiting for some boats to arrive with undeclared catches of fish or smuggled fags. In Corigliano Calabro there are no taxis but nobody will tell you why. A view from a bridge often consists of looking at a pile of abandoned fridges etc. I think all the above have Mafia involvement but thats not talked about.

I like Calabria because it has such variety. A great place to stop is the old hill town of Morano Calabro on a newish sosta. There are countless places to stop in the hills and by the beaches.

Never be 'put off' by the talk of one persons,or a rumour, take heed and be carefull but there's many a stunning place found by not listening to others, never the less,i try to stay away from trouble or warned areas, especially town or cities, just like UK....Italy,if your willing to travel,Rimmini and the coast all the way down to Brindisi, looks very inviting,AND if you have the time, instead of turning round, cross into Greece from there on the ferry (180 euro) for 6 berth camper, dogs alowed on deck, plus elec plug in etc,i think a 12 or 20 hour trip,so a chance to relax and sleep etc, thenthe coast of Greece and all its history, the many islands or the mainland, hundreds of wild camping places, mainly i use fishing harbours and the like, couple o nights ,no one bothers, some places a week at a time FREE,sometimes you can ask at the harbour master, and for a small fee of price of elec/water can use the boat/harbour,a low profile is a must, perhaps hidden away a touch but accepted,by doing this route, and if you have time you can travel and never see it all,in a couple of years !follow the coast past Thessaloniki and Kavala, and there deserted stretches of beach etc for miles and miles, keep going and you have the magic land of Turkey or Bulgaria !!!

Alfa Romeo Centenary in 2010

Not sure whether this is good or bad but I believe there will be major centenary celebrations in and around Milan on and around 24th June this year.

I suppose it's good if you're interested in the cars, bad if you don't want the crowds.

Fiftysomething (and should know better!)

My biggest memory, potholes like craters off the motorways and when we stayed at Anzio on a campsite dozens of British 'travellers' all driving brand new 4x4's around the site all day going nowhere (maybe putting a few miles on the clocks), bizarre:confused:
