Isle of Hoy

I’m thinking of going to the isle of Hoy next month and was wanting to know how long have other people stayed on the island for. Would a week be to long? Also are there any shops on the island to top up food supplys.

Food, you would be well advised to stock up in Kirkwall or Stromness before you go, you can get essentialls on Hoy (at a price!)

you could probably walk around Hoy in less than a week and unless you are big time ramblers there really isnt all that much to do - WWII museum, gun emplacements, Dwarfie Stone and a couple of other bits and pieces.

there are pretty much only two roads one to Rackwick and the other to Lyness (and beyond to Longhope).

I understand that it is the easiest of the islands to get to but Sanday is prettier, Westray has more to do and Eday is also worth considering (as is the easily accessed Rousay)

BTW Hoy is the only one of the Orkney islands with a good population of midges!

Excellent and very knowledgeable advice.

The Game changer for me would be the Midgies, sure know how to spoil a good day out.

Hoy,

As others have said 2/3/4 days tops ?

You can park up at Rackwick and walk to the Old Man, slow bimble should take a few hours.

Longhope has a nice old lifeboat station which may be open.

Lyness has a huge Museum.

& back to the Mainland-> Rousay from Tingwall (just South of Broch of Gurness - well worth a visit) is a nice Island and visit MidHowe Broch ?

Oh, Don't forget Brough of Birsay & "Tomb of the Eagles" & ... & .....

Chzr Mul.

Oh, Don't forget Brough of Birsay & "Tomb of the Eagles....

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE remember the smaller less well publicised sites (they are FREE!)
Unstan tomb beside main Kirkwall-Stromness road
Cuween tomb - just off back road between Kirkwall and Finstown
Wideford (bit of a trek and you have to drive through a farm yard directly across the valley from Cuween) Kirkwall end of the back road to Finstown

Kitchener Memorial (now new and improved) with lovely car park
Yesnaby cliffs - lots of parking
Hoxa gun placements (see it whilst it lasts - it wont be there much longer)

all of the above are free and have parking (limited at Wideford)

Also if you are in Orkney July-August visit Ness of Brodgar free but please put a few bob in the collection barrel - it gets almost no funding most of us working do so without payment and at their own expense
