Internet access in france, is very expensive, even for the local population.

There are several free WiFi hotspots such as McD'd, and Buffalo Grill, these are what I use.

MiFi

Yes I too have that mifi which is excellent in UK. As it is unlocked I tried an Orange Fr sim in it without success and also discovered how expensive 3g is over there.

My tip is to buy a wifi signal extender for about £20 off eBay.

It plugs in your usb and actually works extremely well for picking up wifi. This means you don't have to sit in McDonalds to check your email etc. BigPeetee put me on to it about a year ago and it was a briliant suggestion. I have literally been at the opposite side of the Auchan car park in Coquelles, Calais and picked up the free wifi from Flunch about 200 metres away. So, well worth the money, PM me if you want any specifics.

Hi,

Just to echo what has been said, i found the French orange 3g sim quite expensive two years ago - it would have been ok just for email, but the kids always streamed video!

I think from memory i paid 15euro for the sim, and topped up 15euro for about 3 hours useage - i couldn't work out the data allowance and they only talked in hr / min on the leaflet.

Last year we just used free WiFi (paid a few euros once, as we needed to skype at a certain time).

I have purchased a wifi booster this year - had some good results in the UK

Cheers

Last year we were away for five months and a large part of that in France as well as 5 other countries. We managed internet access 100% every day over the five months using the following methods

Repeat IT Long range wifi antenna. No longer available but this is the replacement. Long range USB antenna NET-WL-USB-CPE2512bg

With some fine tuning we got on the internet with the antenna about 50% of the time from whichever Aire, Sosta, Stellplatz or wild spot we were parked at without hunting for a McDonalds or Ti. When we didnt get a wifi connection I just used my Smart phone which is an iPhone but any smart phone will do and accessed emails and the internet on that through Vodafone Data Traveller which is £10 a month on contract or £2 a day PAYG for Internet access anywhere in Europe. Using the Internet Abroad – Vodafone I think if your on an expensive iPhone contract with Vodafone its actually included. Im on Sim only so just activate it when I am going away.

Works for me.
