I usually read my e-mails when I am on the road anywhere in Europe. Question is; Is it possible, for example when in Spain access my folders and files, like My Documents or My Pictures when I go into my account? If Yes, how do I go about it? Thanks in advance.

Depends.

If you have a laptop with you and you are trying to access your home computer, the one at home would need to be switched and connected to the internet the whole time. Then you can you something like Logmein (there is a free version) installed on both machines.

If you are using your phone, then I don't think you will manage to access your home computer in that way.

Have I understood your question correctly?

europe access

I dont know the answer to that either - suspect that additional access software required on the computer systems however and doubt that access via phone is possible

Related to this - how best to access the internet throughout europe - is there an up to date POI set of wifi access available?

I believe you can if your with BTinternet and you use the BT Vault... I 'think' you would need to have all your documents within the vault so then they are accessible anywhere and at any time. I think you have to set up some kind of synchronisation between the vault and your laptop/desktop computer/s for it to work. Somehow I don't like the idea of all my private docs etc on some server somewhere.

To confirm what has already been mentioned, you'd need remote desktop software such as 'log me in' installed on both computers, and the computer back in the UK would need to be left on. You'd also need a reasonable connection speed in Spain to make it worth while.

The alternative would to make use of a 'cloud' computing service such as 'Mobile Me' (Mac) or similar.

You'd probably better off buying a laptop and taking it with you though.

I use a Buffalo link station which is a hard drive attached into my router. It incorporates a DNLA media streamer which sends files to the TV via the playstation and also acts as an FTP server which allows me to access my files anywhere i have internet connection on a pc. If you just want the internet connection though they are not cheapest method but not bad if you use all the features. The plus side is i dont have to leave pc's running at home, it also uses very little power when running.

It also combines 2 seperate drives which can run in a raid configuration. This means it is possible to use it as either 1 large drive or as I do, run it as 2 seperate drives, 1 of which does an automatic backup of the other. It halves the total storage space but i know all our family photos are securely backed up.

If you are talking about using internet bar computers to access your computer back home, you will need to be very careful to make sure your security is absolutely perfect.

Other problem is that there doesn't seem to me to be all that many net bars around.

Another way to do it would be to use something like google's Picasa and upload all your critical images to it so you can access them from any computer with internet access. Similarly critical documents can also be stored on the web quite securely using Google Documents.

Also swap over to GMail so you can access all your email accounts as well from any computer. If you must retain your ISP email account then just set it up to forward a copy of all emails to your GMail account.

Thaks a lot for so many replies to my query. All the IT talk is too much for me. But I have come to the conclusion it is best not to get to my liles and folders from a foreign PC. Anyway, I am away for 4/5 months and everything is shut down at home, water, electric and even the phone. Another question comes to mind. If my PC is turned off completely how come I CAN look into my e-mails in Spain or in any other Country?

Web email

You could open a new web based email account and then you could open this new address anywhere....
Just give the new email address to your close friends and relatives....
Preferably not hot mail as too much spam....
