International number plates ?

Hello,Just a bit of a rant really ,i drove my camper M/H over to BUlgaria which is 1800 miles as i have a house there, rather than drive back etc i leave it there,of course after the TAX,INSURANCEand MOT runs out (or 6 months) by law you must reregister/export that vehicle into the NEW countries system ??
What i'm getting at is,for long haul journeys or wildcampers or people who live in their vans, this system is a pain in the arse, its because we dont fit into the box that Govt's want us in.
Why cant we have an INTERNATIONAL SYSTEM ,which is easy nowadays as everything is computorized,so that my number plates are logged with my passport also then i can take out insurance/mot if need be in ANY country or definately ANY EU country,as its totally absurd,i have to drive back to origins every year to top up,insurance ,MOT,and tax ?????
So i converted to BG plates, but same applies here, for instance if i decide i want to go to Spain/Morroco etc for a year or more,...well i cant i have to drive all the way back !!
Why cant forums like this ,join forces with other members of other forums similar and petition for special or different rights in terms of motorhomes or travelling EU citizens.
If i'm paying taxes into the EU know, not the UK,then surely i should be able to travel freely for as long as i want without having to return to origin every year?

Pretty much agree with you on this one not sure about this last bit tho, MOT's are an important safty feature to prevent idiots who would run vehicles even when they are a danger to me.

A European system for MOT's and insurance would be good but we all know how good the European Parliment is at running things :eek::eek:

Oi Longneck !!,,,come on dont tempt me, I have made a concerted effort to be good last few days !!.

I will share an observation.

No insurance , Minimum 6 points and a fine.

Speeding minimum 3 points and £60 fine.

No Mot, no points, no minimum fine and your insurance is still valid at least in the respect of third parties.

If you can find an Iota of sense in this then please explain

MOT's are slowly growing together in the EU. Allready Belgian, Dutch and Luxembourg ones are on the same line. It's only a matter of time others will join into an European system.

The penalties are not the point, the fact is any vehicle over 3 years should have an MOT and its a way of trying to ensure that once a year a vehicle is looked over by a professional, yes it can be abused, yes there are those that can 'bend' or 'break' the rules and the law and of course like everything in life (apart from my wife) its not perfect, but the principle is sound.

My point is that allowing Europe to run such a scheme so that we could travel for over a year without returning to the 'home' of the vehicle would IMHO be a disaster, look at the state of some of the european lorries that get stopped in the UK which have supposedly got certificates at least in the UK I believe that our MOTS mean something not sure I think the same of other countries.

MOT's throughout the EU

All EU mot stations should and will be the same(some are still illegal mot's,just like UK or they haven't one)
Before long,in the UK,by the look on the way things are going, you wont have a vehicle on the road,if its older than 5 years !! and because we are so laid back and let things happen,it will happen...

I cant see how this couldn't work, but i dont think Govt's will bother for a 'minority' like motorhomers.
Petition anyone........perhaps they just haven't thought of it !

My point re penalties Mark is in effect there isnt one.

Mot's I find very subjective, for example my mot runs out in April, I will MOT the vehicle in March because of a continental trip.

If I tested my vehicle tomorrow it would fail ( on the horn) so does that mean the unexpired part of my Mot becomes invalid ?

Think about the implications here for a moment in the spirit of what MOT's are supposed to be about. Have I rendered the current MOT invalid ...No I havent, It has an issue and expiry date simple as.

I have a vehicle that wouldnt pass an MOT.
I have a certificate which allows detrioration of condition in effect as soon as I leave the test centre...MOT's arent worth a light in the grand scale.

I understand your point, however an MOT is only a snapshot of a vehicles
condition at a given moment in time. No More no less and should be seen as such

I hope your not driving around with a defective vehicle. It is your responsibility to have a horn that works, Insurance could be void if you had an accident and you needed the horn. Get that tester out again and we will see if it can be sorted.;)
