I have recently renewed the insurance on my 'van.

A couple of days after the renewal date I thought I should check the Motor Insurance Database to ensure my vehicle was shown as insured.

askMID

It wasn't!

Despite the insurance remaining with the same insurer apparently the MID entry lapses when the cover ceases and it can take a day or two for the entry to be reinstated.

During this time ANPR may register your vehicle as uninsured with the potential for a fine to be issued.

Not great ... An argument you would win but probably after some aggravation.

Always check your vehicle is shown as insured, and always use the link above to ensure your check is free of charge.

All vehicles with current tax have to be insured irrespective of whether they are on the road or not.
You do not have to pass an ANPR camera to be fined.
I'm sure the system has some sort of buffer to prevent false alarms at renewal time, or it would be inundated and grind to a halt.

Whenever i insure, MOT or tax a vehicle i always check to see if it`s actually been done which is very easy to do these days.

I always insure the vehicle with plenty of time left on the old policy and have never noticed any " down / unisured " time.

The MOT is done on the first available day to maintain the anniversary of the MOT and that just changes to the new expiry date within a day or so.

Tax ( VED ) was a problem last year, i did it by post and paid by cheque which they got wrong.

I always renew the tax at the earliest opportunity as soon as the V11 arrives.

For some unexplained reason they only taxed my motorhome for 11 months which i picked up on when i checked it online.

It took several phones calls and numerous emails to sort it, then approx 2 months later the website all of a sudden changed and showed the correct expiry date.

I never got any explanation off anyone even though i`d formally complained.

When AskMID first became available I checked one of my vehicles only to find it was on there as uninsured, even though it had been renewed a couple of months earlier, now I check every time to make sure it goes throu.
