Insurance rates for men to cost the same as women, court rules

This business over the insurance rates for women and men is crazy. Women tend to drive more carefully and young blokes (generally) drive like total prats - Let the rates reflect the charges

This will mainly affect the under 30's but means rates for men will fall and those for women will rise.

I hate to disillusion you but one of the interviewees on BBC News yesterday, from the insurance industry, contradicts this.

He said it was more likely that rates for female drivers will rise to the same level as male drivers :(

Insurance isn't a conspiracy theory, it's a market.

Claims + profits = premiums

It's the same claims being made, and the same total premiums, just that the distribution of the premiums will be different.

One could argue that profits may increase, meaning increased premiums overall, essentially as your quote, but the market aspect ensures that this would make it very easy for a new player to enter and operate at the old profit levels, undercutting all the other players.

I think the reference I quoted will be a more realistic reflection. That has men's premiums decreasing and women's increasing.

The insurance industry don't want this overall change, so it's in their interests for their spokesmen to predict gloom and doom all round, perhaps in an attempt to stir up public reaction against this court ruling.

You can see this type of false information put out by many industries. Estate agents are a classic example. It's in their interests to have increased property sales and this is much easier to achieve in a rising market. So estate agents are always in the business of talking up the market, whatever the actual underlying trend.

Again some idiot has gone to court to get a ruling which won't help anybody. All that will happen is women will pay more, at the best men will pay the same.

I remember when a women went to the European court to allow her to work until 65 the same as men, who did that help  Now we are all having to work longer, why didn't somebody try to get it so men could retire at 60  wouldn't that be nice. Not that it effects me anymore as I got out at 60 with a reduced pension, best thing I ever did. Due to get my old age pension this month so I've at least had 5 years of retirement

Just renewd my insurance today and it has gone up by 38 pounds. When I questioned oit they said it was because I have my ex wife as a named driver.
