Our son has just (or is in the process of) purchasing a LWB Transit PVC (self conversion). He is having problems with insurance. Has anyone any ideas? There are 2 problems one is that he only passed his test (1st time age 27) last week. The second is the conversion. Does anyone have any suggestions for an insurance company who will offer a realistic quotoation?

It can be difficult getting insurance for a self built van but a being a new driver will make it even more difficult & I doubt if any will be inexpensive. There are a few threads for self built insurance, I used Shield as they gave me my best quote. The Self Build MotorCaravan Club (SBMCC) used to have a list of self build friendly insurance. On my insurance I couldn't have any driver under 30 without paying a small fortune .

try the coop they do sometimes give really low prices. it maybe better to just call it a van . but be prepared if anything happens you only get van money in a claim.
cheers alan

Thanks for your replies. So far Adrian Flux is coming out top but at over a grand its horrific! We are going to explore the van and insurance being in my/our name with Neil as a named driver - but it may not work as he does not live at home.

Admiral

I'm going through something similar with my son at the moment and this is what we've found.

He's 23, been driving a Peugeot 206 and 207 for not quite 5 years on an insurance in my name, with him as a named driver. Now that he's earning we thought it was time he sorted out the insurance, particularly as he wants to change the Peugeot for a Ford Ranger.

So after many heated words and hours on the interet (his, not mine) he's found Admiral and it seems that if he takes the insurance out in his name with me as a named driver (even though we're not at the same address) it's less than if he's the only driver. I've suggested that he offers a pretty hefty insurance excess and suddenly the insurance on the Ranger is possible, so the Ranger is possible.

My son is happy because he can have it, I'm happy because the insurance is not just in his name but at his address, his father is happy because he's not paying the premium any more and the garage is happy because they've sold the Ford Ranger.

God Bless Admiral. Hope it works for you and yours.
