In need of SUN

Hey Guys, Think ya already know I'm pretty new to site and to motoring. We would love to travel to Spain for a few weeks sun at the end of this month. Don't care where but none of us have a clue really, any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.xx On all aspects

Hi Allie, Try TORROX COSTA which is the Costa del Sol near Malaga. It is a very large car park right next door to Hotel RUI. It has all the facilities that you require, toilets, showers etc. It is right on the beach with a great Promenade full of shops and restaurants, a couple are British. You can even buy an English paper. It is a few kms from Nerja which is worth a day trip and to spend an evening there. It has a "No Campers" parking sign, but don't worry about it. No problems. How to get there:- Drive across France towards Spain, head for Madrid and Granada until you hit the coastline for Motril. Head towards Malaga along the highway A7 then branch off for Torrox Costa. When you hit the coastal road N340 turn right for Torrox Costa. about a couple of Kms you will see the Hotel RUI, turn left into the service road. You will be facing the Hotel entrance, turn right and 100 metres on the left is the car park. Hope this helps. Enjoy your trip and have fun

Thanks ever so much i'm sure this will be a great help, we're looking forward to the experience

Sorry to be a bit of a possible damp squib, but for the last 2 years, at least throughout the winter season the Policia Local have been chucking everybody off. Some diehards push their luck transferring to the adjacent road and argueing with the Police over what constitutes camping as opposed to parking etc. As you would know this spot is directly overlooked by the hotel and apartments, the Police tell me that there are a lot of complaints.
The situation may differ in the summer?

A very nice spot to stay is Canada de Gallego, right on the beach. It is situated, south of Carthagena.
Until last year it was free to stay but because of the popularity, the owner started to ask 5€ a day.
However, if you park just outside the private ground, you don't have to pay anything.

We've been using this spot now several years and although the guardia civil is passing every day, they allow everybody to stay, because it is on private ground.

In the vicinity, you have local shops and at the gasstation you can fill your freshwater tanks.

We have stayed there before but when we went last year there was just us & a German camper. They told us the woman who owned the land was told that a Dutch guy was charging people to camp there. She then told the police to move everybody off  Don't know if it was true or not, another camper turned up & the 3 of us stayed the night. The police came around but didn't bother us.

Which goes to show that you shouldn't rely too much on a prepared list of wild camping spots especially if it's based on last seasons information. I find it pays always to have a plan B just in case.

We always try to have a plan B & if we can a CDEF............ as well

Hi Byronic, I know what you mean, believe me, this spot is fine. Been doing it every year, including this year. As long as you dont draw out the awning or pull out your tables, it is not a problem. I chat with the cops every year, we are glad to see each other.

First time we went to Canada de Gallego (we were told about it by friends) we drove there along the coast (or near to it) from Puerto de Mazarron. Although it was shown on Tomtom as a road it was hardly a track. Just as well we only had a small van  There was supposed to be a nudist beach along there but I didn't see it  mind you I was too busy avoiding potholes

This is the place Cañada de Gallego

It's also a pity that most of the area around there are the poly tunnels, spoils the view a bit.

i take it you are on about perchelles . we were there last xmas and it was empty. we went a bit further along the coast. the big carpark there was empty and the barrier was up but guardia said no stopping. or are you down by the other beach maily used by the germans. there are alot of places around there . we spent xmas on a beach not far from calenegre. perchelles was a good place but a barrier was put up a few years ago. sometimes up sometimes down. we get to most of them with our trucks though.
just heard from friends already over there that its getting more difficult already this year. they say there may not be hardly anywhere to stop if it carries on as it is. cheers alan.something to do with this elkahida hassle or what ever they call them selves .

Winter sun

Interesting thread... can anyone advise me where to find sunny shelter in France next month? Places suitable for a dog please! I am thinking of Going Dieppe - La Rochelle - Biarritz. Thank you.

Can only speak as I find. The last 2 years, in Feb and March I (along with others) have been told to go. Of course somebody arriving a couple of weeks later may be left alone, and be non the wiser.
Virtually every wild camp spot in Spain changes in accessability from year to year, just depends on who's complained to the Police, and whether they, the Police that is, have anything better to do that day.
This is why it pays to have plan B, personally I don't like to get to a spot only to find that everybody has just been evicted and I have no alternative site on hand especially at night.
Of course the best info on wild camp spots is obtained networking whilst travelling you can't rely too much as I've said on last seasons information.

hi okkimmy .speaking from years of travelling .i find france too cold in november ,too wet n windy. also power lines down and floods . having said that it can be better than uk. the worst is if there is snow in the pyrenise and the wind blows down from the mountains .biarritz can be incredibly cold. but i,m sure you will have a good adventure. i nolonger travel through france because i find it too cold in winter .i take the ferry to spain. was there 3 yr ago and found it too cold .cheers alan.

I agree with you in whole. My plan b, c and d is move to the next beach until you find a spot without interuption. I would like to stay I hardly ever stop in one place for more than 2/3 days. Fortunately in 40 years hitting the beaches I have never experienced "a move on" request. I very seldom stop in a built up area. I always find a remote part where it is walking distance to a town.

Although you seldom stop in a built up area that's just what Torrox carpark is. I tend to stay in a decent spot a week or two. Which may explain why I sometimes get caught. If I were to stop 2/3 days only, I think I would run out of decent places to stay on the Costas over a 5 months trip. Which is part of the reason I carry on to Maroc and/or Portugal.
Note I said "decent places" I know plenty of sites that aren't decent.
Be interesting to know the experiences of others on the forum on being "moved on".

Hi, Can i just thank everyone who has replied to this post, we have found it helpful and appreciate it, thanks again

Winter Sun

Thank you for your welcome advise. It is a diffcult one! It will be my first trip abroad next week with my aging dog and I think I will keep it short (a week?) and stay in the North of France... any good campsites in Normandy or Brittainy recommended? The next trip I'd like to head to the sun... did someone say you can ge a ferry the whoel way to Spain from UK? Hopefully still with my dog.

ps Sorry for hi-jacking your original post! Perhaps we will converge in reality too!

hi yes you can get a ferry to spain i take plymouth to santander .trhere is a portsmouth to santander , there may be some to bilbao but idont ever use them. i like brittany ferries plymouth to spain as i dont need a cabin on that one there is always somewhere to crash out. i also pay for a kennel for ther dog but in fact leave her in the trailer. she hates the kennels and gets abit distressed in them .loads dogs barking .people coming and going ..before they had kennels you had to leave them in the vehicle . i have reverted back to it and blacky is much calmer. should she do anything in the trailer it would be my fault ,but she never does. itd an expensive crossing but i find it cheaper in the long run. and i save 2,000ml ofwear n tear on the vehicle. if you decide to doit ,i use a vet in san vicente de la barquera ,to the west of santander . lots parking around there and only charges 27euro . you can come back through torrelavega where there is lidl aldi carefore and about 3 other super markets all in one area . good for topping up before you come home. have fun .i do .cheers alan.

Winter Sun

Thank you... I shall take and use those nuggets of help and advise! Can anyone suggest a good place to go in North France now? I am doing a trial run of getting a ferry with my dog and booked my return a mere week later so can't venture far!? I am going Newhaven - Dieppe. Fond of sea, rivers and never been to Paris yet! I need a plan I feel... my trip starts next week! :)
