Its like a drug. Once you have a camper/motorhome you always have that addiction. Well, post covid we decided the Adria just didn't fit in with our life. So we sold it at the height of the market and got all our money back. But with retirement looming in five weeks we decided to buy a campervan. I dont have the skills to build one myself so its a pre built one. We needed something I can drive as a car each day, the missus can use it and can fit outside the house. So after much searching we bought a VW Transporter T6. One owner only 27000 miles FSH a real beauty. Im picking it up in three weeks time. My colleagues said id become whatever a hipster is.

We are popping down to the Yorkshire show next week as im sure your all aware, buying it is one thing, kitting it outs another. So ill have the credit card in hand and a long list of stuff to buy. But a few questions for you guys.

Insurance, ive had a few quotes, looks ok but is their a company anyone can recommend?
Lithium? Is it worth the upgrade? I easily got by without it before but was speaking to a transporter owner and he had it done and loved it. Might use it and see if its needed. But I will be camping waymore than before as Ill be retired.
Solar. Had it on the motorhome, worked fine but again, its a small van and in the UK with limited sun is it worth it?
Tracker. Given the cost of vans im making it like fort knox. Plan is a spare wheel lock, a bearlock, a peddle lock and the best tracker and ghost alarm I can buy. Any recommendations?
And finally a good place to buy all the gear I gave away when I sold the motorhome.

So hello again all and thanks for any advice. Retirement I cant wait for. The jobs more stressfull each day. My allotments sorted, the photography going well, and voluntary work getting sorted. If only I wasn't dropping to bits but thats age for you.

Welcome back to the motorhome / camper world. Lithium? I think it depends on your usage and whether you are working towards gasless or not. If you can do it all yourself then maybe. If you are getting a pro outfit to do it then it can run up up to £2-3k once you add all the bits needed and solar. Solar is a must though I reckon if you are wilding. Plenty of sun and bright enough weather in the UK and its fairly cheep to do.

320Ah Lithium £500, Orion B2B £250, Solar Panel £200, Victron MPPT £125 [but can be as cheap as £75 'ish for a 75/15 Bluetooth version]. Another £100 for cables/fuses, plus the cost of fitting, and there are members who can do this competently and quickly. Victron prices have fallen significantly, as have Lithium batteries, though the neighbourhood spats started by Tango Man may affect prices adversely for new shipments ...

My quote from Offgrid solutions was not far off £3k. As I said though, if you can do it yourself (I think you also need a different 240v charger in that list) fine but otherwise its still an expensive job if you get a professional outfit to do it and only worth that outlay if you need it.

Thanks Bayyd, ill use it for a bit and see if i need the upgrade. I never went empty on battery in my motorhome so hopefully Ill be ok and wont need an upgrade. But it does have a diesel heater and it will use some battery. Ill see.

I would say thats the best policy. I came within an inch of pushing the Lithium button when I had battery issues with my new to me van a couple of years back. As we are low usage in terms of a gas fridge, couple of laptops, phones etc and a TV we just needed a slight improvement not an all singing and dancing system (For now). So I just added a second 120ah lead acid which of course is a drop in and an extra solar panel taking it to about 230/240w and so far its been superb. I got a lot of help off here though but the cost was nearer £300 than £3000. At some point I will go Lithium but so far I don't need it. See how you get on, you might be the same.

Welcome back,

I've gone fully electric and to be honest I'm really happy with the move. But I also think you are doing the right thing by trying it out as is first.

Best of luck with it all and enjoy your retirement.

Welcome back, we're all of us a lot older, unfortunately! 🤪😂

Good luck with your new van and getting it sorted to your satisfaction. 👍🤞

Enjoy! 😉👌
