Hello everyone! Long time lurker her, reintroducing herself. Well, I've finally taken the plunge! Yesterday (slightly impulsively) I spent my life savings on a lovely Renault Master van conversion that I'm picking up on Tuesday. Today I'm phoning round for insurance quotes and breakdown cover - I have a long list of companies from a Facebook group. On Tuesday I'm going to quit my job :scared: Adventures await for dog and I! :dog:
I have about a billion questions to ask so sorry in advance, please have patience with me.
My first (and most important) one is - Where can I get a new sticker? I've been a member for ages and I've lost it :-D

Good luck

AND
Enjoy !

I simply advise to try to not travel too far and use stopovers for 2 or 3 nights !

Best advice I would give is to read the motorhome forums. You will pick up a mass of information and many people ask questions that you would not think of. In a few months time you may be answering them.

Welcome back Lindsay,

There will be a whole load of great and useful advice coming your way, I am sure amongst them will be the odd joke and I am sure you will filter out the odd bit of well intentioned but maybe not as sound advice.

I have benefited from many great bits of advice by as many fellow members, including:

Charlie - 'Don't waste your money on a generator, it will be on Ebay in a couple of months'

Rob Mc - 'If you like a drink' and he was right, I do, 'buy an Alcosense and use it'

Phil - Well loads, always accurate, always useful. I now treat him like Kin Jong-Un and follow him around with my notebook and pen at the ready.

Rae - He has had many problems with wind and will share them with you.

Annie - Taught me to 'Chill the F**k Out'

Sue - Who taught me why listening to Annie is so much fun.

There are many, many more, far to many to list here but all are valued for making my first 2 years so much fun.

If I can add my advice? It is to put the basics in place so you are able to deal with whatever might happen during your adventures by having a contingency plan.

and then sit back and enjoy all the amazing things your new lifestyle will give you.

:lol-061:

Saga insurance was cheapest for me

Auto Aid breakdown 15 months for 12 , offer ends tonight so be quick !

Hope this turns out to be the best decision of your life.

Keep us posted about your adventures.
Even bad experiences are better than no experiences.
You can overcome them, learn from them and then embroider them over the years.

Hi sorry I cant tag you but both Sky and I gave a detailed account when we were full timing which may give one or two ideas to think about...I always found laundry a pain

First couple of trips stay local incase you need to bolt home with an unscheduled disaster

Attend one or two meets not only social but loads of experience and advice.

My last point perhaps sounds a tad unusual ,but if a college local night school runs a mechanical course some tailored for ladies then give it a go naturally you wont know everything but gives a good understanding when we are rabbitng away about some of the technical stuff.

Most of all have fun I fulltimed 4 and a half years and loved every moment, met some great people, walked my dog up hills and down dale I would defineately do it again

What a wonderful response, thank you! So much better than the negative vibes you get in real life, although I haven't been brave enough to tell many people yet! I am hoping to be brave enough to spend a lot of time in Europe (poorly dog allowing). I plan to start by visiting friends, staying at campsites and hopefully gradually getting braver. A meet is a PERFECT idea! To be honest, I am c******g myself a bit :lol-053:
Insurance wise, I wanted to talk to AIB and A Plan but both are closed until Tuesday which is when I'm collecting the van. I will give them both a quick call first thing. My favourite quote so far is with Barry Grainger, they sounded nice. The difference between 90 days European travel and 180 days is nearly £100! Not sure what to do there.... do people ring and tell their ins company if they go a couple of days over?
Re. breakdown, people talk a lot about getting it through the ins company but do they know who it actually is? All my quotes seem to actually be the AA - apart from one which was NCI/amtr-something.
Thanks for all the good advice, especially Channa and ED, loads of good stuff there, and everyone for their kind words. I can't believe I've finally done after all this time!
Sooooo much packing/sorting to do!

Talk to the nice Yorkshire people at Safeguard.
Unlimited overseas cover and AA Breakdown all inclusive.
If you're planning serious long terming and abroad, don't try to cut corners, especially if your van has a limited warranty.

We have had many problems that they have helped us overcome.
Not a quibble in nearly 19 years.

As an agnostic I feel Luke 15:7 applies:-

"I say to you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repents,
more than over ninety and nine just persons,
which need no repentance."

No offense intended to anyone of any faith.

Is it a spot the difference puzzle ?

Amen to it, any road up.

I wasn't offended until I had to read it again:dog:

Try NFU also! They give EU cover 365 days. But not always cheapest. Good luck with your adventures :drive::dog:

Broken my thoughts with that remark, I insured my van with NFU early days for the 365 day cover as I was going to France with no fixed return date

They seen to underwrite on a case by case basis and premium for me at least was favourable,

Another thing too, is my MOT ran out whilst in France and couldn't realistically get home due to work commitments I rang them and were happy to confirm I was still insured for the home journey

As an aside pre booked a test in Doncaster confirmed by e mail drove from Hull docks straight to Doncaster keeping me all legal. Stopped en route at Old Arthurs who kindly checked things over
