I mentioned before that we were due for our usual family get together in early May.

Well that ain't going to happen, but it will happen some time and I have been playing with Garmin to decide this years itinerary.

Going, its usually Calais along the A16 towards Dunkirk, then right onto the N225 and E42 towards Namur, Bastogne and Martilange for cheap fuel.

Then it’s a choice of routes until we arrive in Innsbruck, First visited in 1965, before heading over the Brenner pass into Italy.

After several days visiting family in San Colombano we will head due east towards Turin and France.

At Asti we turn south west towards Cunio and the Colle della Maddalena, arriving at Le Lauzet Ubaye to spend a couple of days here 44.428248, 6.433900
Before moving on.

From here we have several routes we have used before with good aires and nice views as we slowly meander north, but I am looking for fresh ideas.
So use some of that spare time you all now have and lets hear them.

Let us know about your first trip after the lockdown.

P.S You still can’t come.

Sorry to put a dampner on the idea, but I would not be surprised at all if travel abroad will not be possible for quite a while without people having proof they have the Covid-19 Antibodies in their system (An antibody test is mooted to become available in the next few weeks).
Same principle is in place in lots of countries where proof of Pre-treatment is a requirement to be allowed in (Yellow Fever is one that comes to mind when travelling to certain African Countries).

After all, if you were the government of a Country, would you want to let in anyone not knowing they could kick off a new outbreak? Get used to holiday in the UK for the foresable future!

Whenever you do get to do that trip before you think about heading north and assuming you have not done them before head a bit further south and see the Verdon Gorges and Lac St Croix. Got to be in the top five highlights of France IMO. Then of course you have all of Provence to explore which is one of my favourite regions. If time allows I would head roughly west from the Verdon Gorges through some spectacular country all the way to the Dordogne before thinking about going north again from there.

Would love to do all that again. One day hopefully.

Thanks Barryd,

We did the Verdon Gorge many years ago, but no reason not to do them again. Good shout.

Been pass Lac St Croix but not stopped. Any favourite stopping place ?

I think we'll all be lucky if we go anywhere or want to go anywhere this year because this corona virus ain't going away our only hope is a vaccine

Ah well, thats a good question. The Aire at St Croix village is great if you can get one of the sideways on spots with a lake view but not so much if you end up down the bottom when its busy where it becomes a bit of mash up but thats where I would head for. Timing is crucial! We tend to arrive late morning or just after lunch and if need be wait for someone to vacate one of the lake view spots and be ready to move. last time we were there I think we stayed eight days. There is no time limit and some people stay much longer. Only issue is if you dont have secondary transport its a bit of a steep walk down to the lakeside. There is a campsite at the bottom of the hill right near the lake but its a bit scruffy looking. Couple of good ones on the road up top which are very good value but you would need the van each day to get down to the lake and they charge for all day parking in peak season at least and it gets busy down there.

Some wild spots along the back road with amazing views high up above the lake between St Croix village and Moustiers but generally wilding is not allowed around the lake. A couple of Aires and parking places on the other side but we have always preferred the Aire at St Croix village. Is right next to the boules court which is a hive of activity and a very short walk into the lovely village with plenty of bars and eateries.

Its a lovely place to be in the summer on a balmy warm night. Lots of Atmosphere.

This is a ride around the village and you can see the Aire at the end

Although we'd love to go to France, I think being practical our first trip will be to Scotland which we always enjoy. I think we will have to avoid NC500, because that is getting too popular.

I agree with @jann. The virus will not go away ! So for this year and maybe 2021 it will be prudent and maybe necessary to remain in UK.
I suspect there will be many hoops to have to jump through to enter another country or indeed return to UK.
Such as being tested, isolation, or simply refused !
Many other potential problems as well.
This is so new and as yet we have no idea as to how it will affect international travel.
I could expand to foreign air travel as well..much the same.
Indeed I think air-ticket prices will rise significantly when such travel is again "Bookable".
No doubt Bill (2cv) and others have more informed views.
Even the tunnel/ferries will have to increase prices as enhanced disinfection/cleaning routines will cost !

Similar question on the other forum.

Agreed continential trips seem unlikely in 2020.

I fancy a meander through the middle of Wales, South to North, and then via The Lakes and Yorkshire Dales to Galloway, south west Scotland. Sticking to the quieter places.

I wonder how many vans will be out and about on once we are all released.

Our daughter and family have been in Sydney for 8 years and are planning to return to the UK. Interesting times and decisions re how, flights, and when. If they are still there at the end of 2020 we would like to spend a few months with them as we have before but whether that will be possible `we don't know` - one of my grandson's favourite saying.
