Just returned from an 8 day trip to Iceland where we rented a couple of cottages in out of the way places and a 4x4 to get around. What a fantastic place and a Wild campers dream land!

A lot of the highlands are inaccesable during the winter, and I think you would need 4x4 even in the summer, but there are loads of places to stop, some with dedicated motorhome facilities such as toilet disposal etc, and hardly anyone around - we drove for over 2 hours some days without seeing a soul. I only saw one sign specifically prohibiting overnight motorhome parking at a small harbour/ferry terminal on the Snæfellsnes peninsula, which I guess in itself suggests there is lot of wild camping going on.

Many Icelanders seem to have caravans and motorhomes parked in their driveways so I was wondering about the possiblilty of doing an exchange for a few weeks maybe summer 2012. Anyone on this forum from Iceland or have any contacts with motorhome owners there?

I guess another possibilty would be to take my own van on a ferry from Scotland but since returning to full time work, time is sadly a bit restricted.......

We took our motorhome and stayed for nearly 4 weeks (summer though, not winter unless you like 22 hour nights) and enjoyed it enough that we would like to go back.
Ferry from Bergen to get there (via Scrabster and faroes) and then came back to Scrabster after a forced three-day stay on the Faroes.

Heard that they have changed the route to cut costs so maybe scrabster isn't a stop now.

Yes, motorhoming is easy - as is wild camping despite the fact that legally it probably isn't allowed. Several towns have free camps, some with hot showers. Our cost for campgrounds was $0.00 so that made up for the high cost of getting there.
