Has anyone else seen the FB post of 6-7 vans going to do the NC500 in Convoy ?

Pass me the hankies, please.

Nope, Brits....

Makes no odds, single track, passing places, all the potholes. Ive been working up there for a year and consider myself 'arf local. I feel sorry for the locals. Good much needed income boost 4 some but the architects of that brainwave didn't factor in just how over popular it would become. No guessing, I'm not the biggest fan. We joke about layby pulling over (not) and sheep spotting at crawl o' speed. I've seen it, witnessed it aplenty.

Well it's not us as we don't travel in convoy we travel independently and meet up at tea time in areas we have researched that can accommodate the 3 vans that are in our little group. 🙂🙂

Typical of the way things are going.... Facebook and forums have a good deal to answer for sadly.

Seen the same thing happen in the 4x4 green laning world... Hence why we have a fraction of the lanes left to drive now.

Annie anymore than two vehicles in a two hour period is considered a convoy that’s a new record the previous convoy record was five stood for years it was Donald the one handed crofter who witnessed it he said there was a chance there could have been more but ran out of fingers.😜

is it fear of bandits ?
only ever travelled in convoy once , 3 vans in Maroc , not worried about baddies , just that none of us had breakdown or insurance. didn't like it

Seen 6 Italian vans travelling together in Portugal this winter all pulled into Chicken Maries first one in was out quick to see all the others park like synchronised parking

Ive seen several 'convoys' up there - mainly huge great Italian registered M/hs.

I was on Orkney once when about 40 of them arrived they drove into the campsite at Kirkwall and attempted to book in (no one had prebooked) unable to get in they sort of drove around for the day, they all spent the night in the Ring of Brodgar carpark (just about filling it to capacity) and got the ferry back to the mainland the next day!

Another time a largish group were on the road between Laid and Sango (A838) they attempted to park up in the carpark at Ceannabeinnie beach - which might have held one of them but certainly not the group

I dont know why they do it, the vehicles are unsuitable for the roads even if they travelled alone.

I remember a few years back driving up the A838 to Durness and only met 2 vehicles coming the other way all the way up there.

I remarked on this to one of the locals in the bar next to the site at Sango Sands. He replied, "Aye, it does get busy".

How things change!

I think that Traveling in a convoy of 3/4 vehicle or more on the roads in the UK & her island s is really a bad idea,,,a Single M/H is often looked upon in complete contempt by the locals when it visits certain places, So a convoy of M/Hs snarling up a small village, Main Comuting route, Popular POI Or Beutie spot is bound to be Big ‘Negative’ news & Gossip to some & a further talking point for them for the rest of the season as well !. Made even worse if ‘The Convoy occupant s’ Keep themselves planted & don’t Explore, interact & possibly even contribute in some way to where they visit!.

Wouldn’t it be great if a few of us could (By Prior arrangement with the locals & a proper site stay arranged ) visit a popular POI armed with Litter Pickers, Bags & a few quid in our pocket to actually Spend in the local cake & Bun Shops, Cafes & Corner stores after A mass joint litter picking effort to try & raise The Negativity we often encounter.

If you think about it, We could choose say 10 or 12 places to visit in such a way that covers a swathe of the UK & THATS a 2 month trip in the summer by itself !.

Yes a dozen or so motorhomes travel to several POIs together then all park overnight . As long as you're not Italian that should be fine

I was thinking more on Visiting a ‘Site’ by prior arrangement Near a POI No different when WC have Meets !,,,,But as part of that meet walk into the surrounding areas from there to do a few hrs ‘Interaction & Clean up’ trying to actively Promote that ‘We ain’t ALL the same & to look out for the WC sticker’ kinda thing & try to raise the Visiting M/H image in a more Positive & Mutuality beneficial light ! You know the kinda thing ‘Harts n Minds’
Before then returning to the site & the awaiting the ritualistically Wood & Log Raging Fire Pits, Alchol, Food & Nicities on offer & Probably ALL of which was actually ‘Pre Bought’ in preparation elsewhere & taken too the meet so the Local shops don’t even benefit in the area actually visited !.
Just taking the support given to ‘Local Fish,Chip & Pint’ Purchased by some of the WC meets one step further might get noticed !.

Why No Italians ?,,,I don’t see why they couldn’t join in !,,,

What is the NC500 I just looked at Google Maps and it showed me the centre of WICK , we spent a few hours in Wick once and thought it the worst place we had seen in Scotland? so am I missing something here ? UPDATE AH , now I see the plot, found more on Google about the route, we did a lot of it years ago before we had Motorhomes , we B n B as we went along , we had an estate car at the time, and took sleeping bags in case we couldn't find B n B but had no trouble, the trip inspired us to get a camper van as we saw lots of wild campers as we travelled and thought that is for us, I did not know then that it was known as the NC500 .

How could you say that?

It has a great Tesco AND a Wetherspoons - OK there is absolutely nothing else but Thurso - the only other 'town' up there has a scrappy little Tesco (no fuel) and no Weatherspoons and not very much besides

BTW how on earth did you manage to spend a couple of hours there - were you broken down?
