We don't have a motorhome, but a lwb merc sprinter and have fitted it out as a camper for the past few years. We don't have windows in it, so are lucky that we can park basically anywhere. Side streets etc. We should have been away by now, but got hold up with various things, but I am so pleased now, as I wouldn't have found this site.
Only went to the sons in Marseille last year, but the year before, we travelled extensively in France, Spain, and Italy. Only stopped on campsite about 5/6 times in 6/7 weeks. The best place was on a little beach in Italy ~ which we spotted from a motorway as we were travelling along the coast. There were a couple of campers parked. The entrance took quite a bit of finding, as it was a sort of underpass to get to it. One of the couples parked up were Italien, and live about 5 mile down the road.
I love wild camping ~ but a bit scary at times.
The worst thing we did ~ teach me to read the backs of toll tickets ~ in Portugal. Didn't realise that if you park over night, they charge you 80 euros. Expensive lesson to learn - thank goodness for the credit card.
