Engine battery was totally flat. Put it on a slow charge for 24 hours. Last evening I turned the engine, started first time. Problem is: When I took it for a drive the Speedo needle goes haywire, in all directions. The Rev counter needle does not budge. The Fuel indicator needle reads 1/4 full though the tank is absolutely full. Temperature gauge seems okay. The digital mileage counter also goes crazy. Even at a stationary position, I can see the Taco mileage increasing a mile every 5 seconds. To date I have done 97 miles in a stationary position. Question is, do I need a complete new Instrument panel or is there a management box somewhere that might need replacing. I would appreciate your thoughts and knowledge on this. My thanks in advance.

Is it possibly a poor earth strap, I've read somewhere that with poor engine earth strap guages can start to act peculiar.

John.

If you had the battery off (or flat) the ECU will need to reset, a drive up the road should do this, but if not look on the net for how to do a full ECU reset.

I am having problems with my ECU again, on my car tho, turn the engine on, disconnect the battery and rev the engine for a couple of minutes, this advice was given to me by the AA, it worked for me, but i suppose it depends on what the code reads on the ECU, mine is a fuel pressure issue and a dogdy connection on a relay switch.

Hope this helps

Hi David and Ann,

It does sound ECU but as this can be expensive if you do the wrong thing. I would contact a dealership for advise unless there is somebody you really trust for advise. Sorry for the negative reply.

hi, cant help with this one as i,m not in the know .but i do know on some vehicles if the alternator as gone down they can go in to a use nothing mode. .think as been said trip to dealer .get the cheque book out.

This is exactly what happens on modern motor cycles, the problem is a faulty rectifier/regulator so in your case i would be looking at the alternator.

Common Problem

Hi,

This is a common problem with Fiat / Peugeot. I wanted to check the fluid level in my cab battery and was about about to disconnect it - you have to to get at all the cells - when a friend and Fiat commercial trained technician said if I did disconnect there was a good chance the ECU would need to be reset (not always but most times!). He did the check for me in the garage and did have to reset the ECU. The same problem applies to discharged batteries. I think you will need to get a dealer to assist you.

Sorry for the negative reply.

Thank you all for so many replies. I don't think it is the alternator, as it would show up that I am running on battery, meaning the battery light would be on when on the move. I will wait till Tuesday and contact a Fiat dealer. I hope it does not cost me a fortune. Thanks again for your advice

Hi OH, good to be back. It sure is sad that the folks on here do not come to you for advice. I really enjoyed those moments. For me, it was the best for 2011.
Oz was fab: 3 1/2 months was long enough. Best time I had was the 10 days we spent in NOOSA on the Sunshine Coast. All good things come to an end. Looking forward to our Euro tour end of May until September.
Nice to know you are still around. Hope you had a decent Easter. All the best.

disconnect the battery, wait 10 mins then connect it back up.

If you do this I am told you need leave with key in position 1 for five mins before trying to start but I have no personal experience. Ment to give ecu time to reset before you use it.
