We went away again this weekend to wild by at another resevoir on Dartmoor, very cold outside but loved every minuite of it as usual, and i got to thinking my question is which do owners prefer as being the most comfortable, between the pull down bed and the rear fixed bed scenario?Which is best?

Oi we havnt got a pull down bed or a fixed bed but we have a pull out bed in the back. Nigthtime is a huge kingsize bed. Daytime a U shaped lounge.Love it and would not have it anyother way. Takes less than two minutes to make UP/Down.
Right time I caught that ORSE of mine. ;);)

Oops just read the thread and noticed its for Hymers. I dont have a Hymer. Sorry guys. So is this going of thread. I spose I will have Chana on me back soon.

Horses for courses.. so they say I suppose. Our first van Hymie E650 model was an A class with drop down bed. It was really comfy.. a bit of a pain having to climb over a body to get out of bed if you were stuck on the inside. But hey I suppose you could make that fun.. tee hee;) We've gone for another A class this time (not a hymer) as we like having the space when the bed is up out of the way. Fixed beds take up a lot of room but vans with them have the advantage of large locker/garage. So I guess it's down to what's more important, space inside or storage space.

hi sue after my 3rd layout of my self-build i opted for a fixed bed this way my beds always made up,i got loads of storage space below and i can put stuff on thee bed too if nec., could'nt be bothered making beds up and then the problem of where to store bedding.:)

That's the beauty of a dropdown bed too.. it's always made up. The only draw back is I can't go for a kip while he's chauffering me!! Not that I would as it's dangerous.

lol, fit straps like on a stretcher or cargo nets:)

I think Sue and n8erbos really hit the nail on the head that the fixed bed also gives you great fixed storage too.

I'm thinking more in terms of a transverse fixed bed with a proper garage, not a longitudinal fixed or a convertible U lounge. Although they both have storage lockers underneath, they can't swallow really large items like a garage can. A transverse bed is like a mezzanine floor in a building. Two spaces for the price of one.

Because we will be full timing i feel that we will need the space that you get with a large locker under the bed set up.But it is all about space and compromise.I always felt that the longitude bed with the locker underside of this was the way to go forward, but in the meantime for some years until fulltiming we have our beloved b544 with no large locker and the swing down bed.Im glad i have this set up as it gives more space and has started us out with the swing down which i really liked when looking at motorhomes, its just a shame the bed doesnt actually swing down further to give a tad more headroom.

my bed is a 3/4 approx 4' above floor level across rear of van, its fixed with loads of space underneath. i was going to build a access door from the outside rear but decided against it.my first layout was a pullout bed but hated thought of where bedding went, where partner/passengers went whilst making bed up,access to wc, 2nd option was drop down but same problems as said, now 2 can sleep in fixedand still have access to wc and cooker. i love being able to pull into layby and have kip and then wake and drive off if nec. without need for packing bed/cushions away.:)

Nowt in your thread to upset me Big B, and I dont think I have ever made mutterings re keeping on/off thread.

Bed wise I dont have A Hymer but a CI..

I use the overcab bed and keep the liviing area has that and it works for me.

Channa

I might be able to help you here as my Hymer's equiped with both. The front drop down as you may be aware is the only bed in some of the high end S class models. It's a very comfortable bed. I've never spent a full night in it as the kids are up there. The salesman told me that many people have commented that they get a better nights sleep in the drop down than they do at home. So no complaints & I can only give the drop down full marks as the kids have never complained. It's a fully slatted base with a nice mattress.

The fixed rear is about the same level of comfort but in much more pleasant surroundings. IE you've access to all the rear lockers & proper focused reading lamps. Mrs Davesport & myself love that rear bed. We're usually quite active whilst away & love retiring to that big bed after a full day. Again fully slatted base & exceptional mattress. The big bonus for us is the garage underneath which is full of mountain bikes & kyaking gear. Everything's out of sight & the bikes are "secure" & clean when you arrive.

We don't need lounging space as we're more often than not outside. The fixed rear works for us. Not everyones cup of tea though. I personally would'nt have a van without the fixed rear bed. It's ace :)

D.

Pull down bed everytime - ask anyone who's met me at a wildcamp meet - I only surface for a bout 20 minute over a weekend - Zee Zee was gonna call for an ambulance one time !!!

I like fixed, on my last Hymer the bed was made of memory foam and was 1.8metres wide but still a crush with 2 dogs up the middle.
