Hymer b534 with one door, is it safe?

I'm thinking of trading in my Mercedes 207d for a Hymer b534. I love the look and I think the 534 is shorter than the others and therefore easier to park up on our drive. However, looking at photos of them it looks like they only have one door, no driver or passenger door, just a habitation area door. Is this safe. If stopped on the side of an English road in a left hand drive would it be a bit risky to get out? Advice sought please.

Sorry but wrong section, mods, please move if poss

Sorry I didn't mean to post this in the for sale and now I can't see how to move it.

Drivers door (on left side) is an optional extra. We had one on our B564 (1994) and have one on out B634 (2004) but never used them. Always go out through Hab door although have to say on both models they are just behind driving seats. If hab door was at the back I would feel more comfortable with one at front to have as an emergency exit (I am getting too old to be climbing out windows)

We have the S700 and only ever use the drivers door to get better access to Peage machines, as I must have very short arms. Joan now just hops out of the habitation door if I cannot reach so we keep the drivers door perminently locked.

We have no problems getting in or out in the UK.

Absolutely safe with just the habitation door. Vehicles would not get Type Approval otherwise.

And of course better security if you are troubled by fears of break ins.

Thanks, I went and saw one today in the flesh, that is the fibreglass and aluminium and was happier about the single door. The cab is so spacious it feels easy to get out. The one I looked at had light wood fablon covering all the wood. It made it quite light but looked horribly scruffy. It must have been a labour of love applying it all but I wonder if it was hiding anything.

It's our B534 your talking about!

Hi Duckrow,

We bought the Hymer advertised by Southdowns (Referenced by Just Jane) just under three years ago. It is a 1997 model and we have spent at least 100 nights onboard each year. Been to Greece twice and can thoroughly recommend Hymers of that age. They are better than the modern ones. It's just under 6m, which is good for parking and for ferry fares. We prefer the rear lounge model to the rear kitchen ones but seat belts must be considered. Ours in the rear are just lap belts.

I used to be a frequent visitor to this site until it cost. I now look occasionally but will keep an eye on this topic in case you want any more information

Regards,

Brian

Thanks Brian.
Looked at a right hand drive b534 today which had very few extras but it did have the near side door. I think I may get it at a reasonable price (sale forced by emissions zone) and sell the Merc in the spring when i hope prices come back up a bit.
I may go away for a week at a time but mostly it will sit on our drive so limiting the length to just over 17ft seems attractive.
Asit is RHD it has abuilt in gas tank but it seems to be a German filler. What adapter would you use to fill it at the pumps here in the UK?

Hi again Duckrow,

Ours is LHD which is ideal for most of our travels. We have two gas bottles, one English and one European so that we can obtain a spare bottle anywhere so, sorry, but I can't help you with the filler question. Gaslow will probably be able to provide a suitable adaptor.

Thanks, I am still mulling over the pros and cons, b534 vs b544. The problem it seems to me about extras is that many are relatively inexpensive compared to the variations you see in price. If one Hymer is £4000 cheaper there is a lot of change left for reversing cameras or air ride or even a satellite system. You could even chose auto find satellite rather than a manual one.
What do you think of a 1.9 td vs 2.5 non turbo engine? Both fiat. 1990 ish

my 584 is 6.03 meters ...sounds more like 20 ft to me ; isn't the 534 about the same ?

Yes, I certainly thought the 535 was 5.35 metres and I took a tape measure along and measured one, a 1989 B535. It seemed to be just that: 5.35 metres.
It does seem hard to find a definitive answer.

The New B534

Hi Again,

I thought the initial 5 was for vans between 5 and 6 metres, and so on, and the other numbers represented the layouts until I saw the new 534 specification, which you can see here:
Video motorhome review - Hymer B534

Have a look at the video, some good points, some bad. especially the price!

Brian
