After leaving the recent Lanark meet we travelled down to the Keswick C@CC site on the banks of Derwent water. With the age concession which we both qualify for the cost for the few nights before easter was around £20 per night. For a lovely site like this with good facilities and excellent location I thought that was a reasonable price.

I decided to extend the stay over the easter period which turned into high season, the price went up to a staggering almost £36 per night .Despite this the site was full over the bank holiday with a waiting list of people willing to pay the extortionate price. There were lots of families there with young children who must have paid more as the club charge per person.I don't think I'll be camping on club sites during peak season again.

Avoid them like the plague myself.

These 'Clubs' have become bloated and top heavy in much the same way as the YHA and the NT. Totally lost sight of what the 'members' actually require from the sites. The temporary holiday sites and the small private sites are usually more use to us.

Cheers

Are all the orders, rules, regulations and 1,000,000 commandments still plastered all over the site :rolleyes2:

I agree there has to be some site rules etc. but the Camp Commandant has a serious case of OCD as he marches around the site inspecting :mad2:

We went there last year ( not high season ) with our daughter, son-in-law and grandson for them to try out their new caravan, the price was bad enough then :scared:

I'm afraid that if these sites were the only option then we would be grounded.

I know they have overheads, but as clubs, I thought they were non profit making.

I've been reading about the latest hooha in Whitby. One councillor said " there are plenty of good quality campsites locally", so I checked out one, a mere £37 per night, off peak.:scared:

Just an edit.
I'm no good at putting up pics, but I saw one in the gazette of the old coal yard CP, at the very end, past the co op, and it did look like a campsite. It probably was taken over the Goth weekend, but it's no wonder the locals are complaining.
Before the parking ban around the town, the number of vans wasn't so noticeable cos they were spread about.

Think this is a prime example of unfortunatly the way the world is going. Also shows how lucky we are to have a Website full of brilliant locations like "Wildcamping" to allow people still to go and enjoy so many lovely locations but be able to do it at a cost which they themselves can control.

I avoid campsites like the plague. I just can't stand the places. Regardless of cost I think a night out in the wilds in some lay-by or in a town car park is a far more interesting and enjoyable experience. I know some people like other people's vans around overnight for "security" and if that suits them that's fine. I was a member of both the C&CC and the CC (CMC now) once so I know all about the bureaucracy, hassle and expense involved.

I stayed on the Derwentwater site in early March at a cost of £12.00 a night for me and the dog. I had intended to stay in the POI in Portinscale, but for the price I had electricity and nice clean showers with the town 200 yds down the road when the weather was not too good.
It seems I'll never get to use the POI now as the "no overnighting" signs went up on Thursday I believe.

I can see some are ridiculously over priced. Others however are great value. I stopped at the C & CC at Sandringham en-route to Legends of Rock in March. Opting for a grass pitch with no EHU, as I have an 'Icarus 105'* so no need for EHU but full use of showers, disposal, toilets etc and an awesome location, at £8.35 a night.

I am currently on the C &CC site at Norwich for 7 nights, ahead of the Whitwell meet for £11.21 a night, same terms, a great little site, fantastic location but not stopped raining, as yet :)

Spending 8 nights back on the C &CC site at Sandringham following Whitwell meet for £9.37 a night, same terms.

I do love long, long ambling walks, exploring towns, cities or just open countryside. The use of sites, offers me more peace of mind while leaving my campervan for hours on end and an instant, long hot shower on my return.

I love wild camping and meets with the Wildcamping group but I also enjoy some solo time, off exploring here and there, occasional sites are therefore very useful but not at £36 quid !

Simple economics surely £36 per night is not overpriced because people happily pay it and there are waiting lists. Sites wouldn't be full if the £36 was exhorbitant That is totally different to people who are not prepared to pay £36 because they don't see value for money Then there seems to be a set that love the idea of anything free !

I frequent a lot of caravan groups legacy of work days and a common complaint is the prices for families rocket school holidays etc and taking children out of school term time is frowned upon.

Lots of sites this Easter it seems have been a washout with the weather, Electrics tripping for fun people using heaters etc ,,,glad I can avoid nowadays

We find c&cc cs sites ok

However
We are planning some time in Switzerland this summer.

It makes their sites almost good value !

I feel sorry for families having to pay high prices because of the fact everybody is going on holiday at the same time but it is beyond me why anyone that can avoid it don't. I have no intention of ever going away during school holidays, high prices, everything full to the gunnels with screaming kids and the pleasure of sitting in a traffic jam for hours on end.

I have just cancelled my C&CC membership after 30 years.
When I checked my use of their sites over the last 12 months it was 4 nights ! I’m still going to use their CS sites as I cannot recall the last time I was asked for my membership card / number. I used to use the main sites on a regular basis when a tugger and the entertainment watching people erecting awnings etc was worth the site fee alone lol !
Now prefer wilding in the wilds, not one for town centres and lay-bys. Why anyone wants to park up next to a Road is beyond me but everyone to their own.

It is still possible to book into C&CC club sites for about £10 (or less) if you are a solo traveller and can avail of the age discount - which isnt bad for a site where good facilities are guaranteed.
Showering in the M/home is OK but every so often I like a real good scrub and the laudry facilities although not the cheapest are always good

Club sites are a waste of time and money especially when they close the showers and loos at 11 each morning to clean them. We are on holiday and usually have leisurely mornings and usually don't shower until 11ish.Then there are never enough showers on a capacity site,CL/CSs much better even with one shower for 6 pitches a far better ratio and generally available in the morning. When wilding we have a shower!

The sign as photographed is purely advisory ...

Some interesting points on here,I think the C@CC sites are good value for anyone travelling alone or members that qualify for the age concession discount and use them off peak.I sympathise with the families that have to camp during bank and school holidays and take kids with them,it would be very expensive for a large family using a club site at peak periods.

We find the temporary holiday sites useful, they are usually in a good area and reasonably priced during peak season. With that in mind and also with the age concession discount for off peak camping we intend to renew our club membership although I don't think we will be using a club site during the school holidays again.

The CL & CS sites are small (max 5 vans) but a fixed unit price, so offer great value for families etc... normally £10 to £15 inc EHU etc...

I agree about the 1100 closures - and have complained to the C&CC about it , it used to be 1200 which was fine as Im usually gone by then but most people are checking out at about 1100 and want to use the facilities before they leave only to find them closed

I have never had to queue for a shower or a toilet but that might be because I never go during the high season.

I generally use a C&CC site every two weeks or so but as I am usually in Orkney July and August I dont use them during those months

We joined C&CC although we have not yet used their sites. We will do though as there are some real good prices and thats before we get the age discount. Just been having a look in a 25 miles radius of Isle of Withorn and there are half a dozen sites starting from £9 without discount. From posts I have seen about aires in Spain you can be paying that sort of money there.

We had a couple of nights on a non C&CC site at Burrowhead for £20 a night with EHU then last night at another non C&CC site (Castle Cary) for £25 a night fully serviced pitch. If we had decided where we were heading and looked/booked ahead we could have halved our costs using C&CC sites.

Its obvious if you go for a top site be it any club or private at peak times you are going to have to pay. A family would think £35 a night a good deal I expect, £245 a week in school holidays sounds good to me from what folks at work with families are paying.

Once we are happy we know what everything does in the mh and have a better idea of 12 volt usage/needs we will be happy without EHU and will stop where we can but we dont expect everything free.

Like everything else though its horses for courses :)

Thought this was Slider that had posted this, we went into a pub, she come to pay HOW MUCH
