hi all off to ribblehead on wednesday but not sure how much gas left in bottle is there a method of working it out still works at moment dont know how long been in van as only had since august feels heavy but that could be bottle any thoughts or should i buy small cylinder just in case if so anyone know price of propane ans sizes cheers john and shakey jakey

The manufacturers web site will give you empty weights and full weights of cylinders. Then just weigh yours to see how full - or not - yours is.

thats the reply i would have said too, but if you run out or think your too low let me know, as were coming up fri night, so can go and get you a bottle of butane and bring it with us.

The bottle will have its weight when empty printed on it.

Weigh the bottle, subtract the empty bottle weight and see how much is left. That is the weight of gas.

1 kg of gas is equal to 2 litres of Propane gas.

im pretty stupid, but isnt the rate of flow, usage per hour important? i could have a 1/4 of a tank of fuel, which is fine if im going 10 miles, but if i need to go 200.......well it wont get there. might get 100, but cant be sure.

not sure if he has a heater, fridge etc running off gas

Pour a cup of boiling water in a stream down the side of the bottle.

Wait 10 seconds and run your hand up from the bottom. Where it changes from cool to hot is the level of the LPG.

Thanks!
That sounds a very easy option, and one that I could cope with much easier that weighing the bottle :)

You can often see a line of condensation on the bottle where the gas level is, but what is the use of knowing how much gas is in the bottle without the experience of knowing how much gas you might use. Just give it a shake, if you can hear it swish then you have some gas so just go, take an extra blanket and have fun

Personally, I can hardly lift my bottle into the compartment let alone give it a swish! :lol-053:

If I know roughly the level of gas I can guesstimate. When it gets low I wont go into the wilds without taking a spare wee dumpy bottle incase I can't find a supplier. If it's not low, I can relax and I don't give gas a second thought

It's worked well for me so far :drive:

i have a spare, as soon as my bottle runs out i go buy another one, see you at RH John xx

Yes, we have a spare. Once the first cylinder is empty we know we have a few months to replace it, thus ensuring we always have gas.
I just wish our heating was run on gas, rather than the temperamental erbespacher!!
I like the idea of the hot water trick.

thanks for picking up the portaloo for me. :)

There's no mains gas in the villages round here so alot of folk have calor gas at home for their cookers, and lots of local garages do calor gas so even if you run out, I would think you will be able to get a refill in Ingleton or Settle. The pub will probably be able to tell you where you can get a refill.

When I had my caravan, a medium size gas bottle would last several weeks for cooking and heating, less if fridge was running off gas, but I would guess that if your bottle is half full, with care you would probably get 4 or 5 days out of it. It's very mild here so you prob won't need the heater on full blast all the time.
