How long does LPG last?

We spent 6 nights using central heating and cooking two meals a day, also running the big fridge freezer with our gaslow system.

Filled before we left, opened just one of the two tanks and was still showing green when we got back

We use gas for the grill, hob and the oven all season (March to October) plus a bit of heating early and late in the season. We only have one Gaslow bottle and it lasts all season around 100 nights away Usually costs around £15 per year to fill up.

If you use the heating a lot you will use quite a bit more than us. Fill the bottle up now so you will have a good idea of how much you are going to need on future trips.

We had a tank under our hymer, we would fill up on our first outing of the year and it would last till next year, first fill up was from empty £27 and the next year £15 and we mainly wild camp and only use the fidge on gas.

"was still showing green"

If this gauge is the usual glorified pressure gauge, then showing green means the amount of liquid in the bottle could be anything between full and just one drop left.

Keep a Log Book

I did consider that as a thread title. But nice to hear other peeps' experiences anyway.
This is all rather new to me

The only reliably way of telling how much gas you use is by weighing the cylinder! Difficult to do.
I keep a record of the date and number of nights so I can tell how much I have used in the past in similar conditions. A cold winter's day and night can be 3 litres a day, summer is about 0.5 for me but other users will differ.

The gauges are a guide ONLY because of the way they work. There is one Swiss made ultrasonic one that is accurate and NOT confused by the internal components of the cylinder but it costs over £150.

If you have an automatic change over valve then set it to only draw from one cylinder ( turn the knob from the centre position to face Right or Left and it will empty that cylinder. ) You will then know that one cylinder is empty and be able to judge more accurately how much you are using.

Refilling is NOT altered by this.

This is my gas consumption figures so far for 2015.

We are full timing. The days is the number of days between fills and the Litres per day is the amount of gas used on average per day since the last fill.
We use only Gas or 12v not mains hook-up. We have an 85 litre (68 litre nominal) tank.

Days - Litres per day
15 - 2.99
12 - 2.64
26 - 2.58
15 - 2.43
15 - 2.38
18 - 3.24

The early figures were in Spain. The last one was UK

Date of fill - Litres
04/01/15 - 44.850
16/01/15 - 31.670
11/02/15 - 67.140
26/02/15 - 36.410
13/03/15 - 35.670
31/03/15 - 58.298

Well not sure what you are asking as you have answered your own enquiry, you do not say what size your bottles / tanks are either, but as you have refillable s it is not a problem is it as you can just top up when you see a gas outlet ???

hmmm

I just fill it up when I put diesel in two bottles auto change over I never think about how much I use too busy enjoying life probably use lots in winter. I also do not count

Me too but I have only one bottle 11 kg connected the other is full and just waiting it's turn ,but the first bottle has never yet run out as like you I just refill as and when , I have just had a three Months in Spain and Portugal and France ,refills were sooooo easy there .some folks keep a full record of how much fuel they buy and use too , too busy for that.

Same here, fill up when I put diesel in.
Have 2 bottles and run off one. When this runs out I know I need to fill up at the next opportunity.
Gauges on bottles about as much use as a chocolate firegaurd, they go from green to empty in no time at all.

You have had a few days away so presuming the gas was full when you started, Go and fill it up and that's what you have used. find out the capacity of your bottles and its easy to guess how long the capacity will last.
As for the length of a bit of string its variable :lol-053:

Interesting to read such detailed figures on gas usage, thanks. Ours is significantly lower but we are in a smaller MH (6.4 metre Auto Trail). We do use sites perhaps 20% of the time, in particular if the weather is bad and the sites are cheap - as we've found throughout Eastern Europe recently. We will take hookup if included in the price but generally won't pay if it's an optional extra.

We have two 11KG Gas-IT bottles with a combined capacity of approximately 42 Litres.

Our figures for the past 9 months travel, starting with a full tank to the last fill-up on 6 April (please excuse the formatting):

Over the last 4 years we have averaged 2.8 lt/night in a 8.5 m MH. Most of the time is in autumn/winter/spring and off hookup. We both have a shower in the MH every day and the heating is set to 17C at night.

Compared to diesel usage it is a small cost for being warm.
