Hmm. Doubt that would have given enough clearance at the sides just by lowering the van, but I could be wrong.

followed pete through this gateway halfway through i realised that though his van is wider than mine his awning is on his roof mine is on the side just at the same height as the gate nub

We had a near miss in Toul (France).
No parking and had to go through a similar arch to turn round (7 point turn) and go back.
Inches only of clearance on both sides..
Got done by a pothole which caused the vehicle to rock and so demolished a marker light !
French dealer in Nancy repaired / replaced @ £30 or so..

Gives me nightmares reading this thread . Got diverted due to roadworks in , I think , Constantina Spain . Fortunately a local went ahead and guided me through what seemed like miles , probably a few hundred yards . Lost a couple of marker lights . Worst driving experience .
Local was worth every cent of the euro I gave him
