How could they?

 Yesterday we passed a loch we pass regularly. Right at the edge of the loch, beside the road the water was a cloudy blue colour and a the very edge there was a creamy brown scum. :(

It did not need close examination to assume that some scum had emptied their black waste into the water.

This small loch feeds a burn (stream) that I know to feed a private water supply. How could anyone do this? It beggers belief.

I know that many people do not understand the water and waste water systems used in many parts of the Highlands, and how could they if they live in villages, towns and cities with mains water and sewerage, so whoever did it would have had no idea of the possible consequences ..................... BUT SURELY campers/caravanners/motorhomers should have a general respect for the environment they choose to visit.

We assume that everyone has the same values as ourselves but unfortunately this is not the case. For this reason I urge you all to think before you act. I know that 99.9% of you respect the countyside but to anyone who does not please think before chucking out your toilet waste in open countryside, or worse still rivers or lochs. It does not only harm the environment but could enter somones home through the taps and harm someone's health.

I make no apology for this post, nor where it has been posted. However if Admin chooses to move it, it is up to him/her.

It's shocking and a shame that a very small % of idiots spoil it for all.

Sadly we are all judged by the actions of these idiots hence barriers, 'No Overnight Camping' signs and carparks which were once motorhome friendly being rescinded.

Unfortunately you can't make a silk purse from a sow's ear. No thought for others and no common sense, as you say 'scum'

Bet these people would complain if we went along and emptied our Portapotti's on their driveway.

GRRRRRR

Maybe there was some truth in the stories of waste being tipped at Aldeburgh after all

No apology at all needed for you post, it's just a damn shame it was needed in the first place:(
These people are the dregs of society, no morals and no self respect and bone idle to do the job correctly. Unfortunately in this day and age of I'm all right jack **ck you, this is what we have to expect:mad:
I hope and trust that it was nobody from this forum:)

i agree you really cant think what goes through their minds.
fortunately its not as bad as you first think. sunlight uv rays will kill the bacteria as it s moving around in the water. just about all sewage effluent that leaves most sewage works is put under uv lights to kill things.
alot goes out through reed beds. some out to sea.
i worked in the sewage industry for a while and my son builds sewage works for a living.
but there still is some daft folk out there .a quick dig with a shovel and nobody would be any the wiser. we must keep on educating these folk ,
cheers alan.

This MAY be a natural occurrence. Blue green algae can grow under certain conditions when a lot of phosphate fertislisers have been used in the area. When the water slows the nutrients in the phosphate encourage the growth of the algae, add in some warmish weather and hey presto muck! Often looks disgusting with bubbles and sludge forming on the surface. Its usually very toxic to fish and can burn skin on humans.

One of the joys of intensive chemical/industrial farming.
