Some guy knocked at our door about Solar Panels. We invited him it and listened to what he had to offer. Bottom line is that: He will install 4.3 (4300w) panels on our roof on a 25 year roof lease. Panels and installations free of charge. It is supposed to be Govt: funded. We told him we will think about it and let him know. They are called Sunhome.com. What are your thoughts or comments on this?

Also a company called 'a shade greener' - they fit panels for free and you get to use the power for free. No use if you're off touring in the summer or out at work in the daytime as you're not allowed to store it.They make money by selling the excess power to the national grid for loadsamoney.
If you can afford to, fit them yourself and take all the profit. Downside is the time needed to get your investment back.

There are schemes for installing solar and wind generating devices whereby all electricity is paid for by your electricity supplier - depending on the generating unit up to 40p per Kwh (unit of electricity) - look up "Feed in tariff" AND you get any electricity you have generated to use free of charge. It sounds as if there are companies out there who will install generators and give you the free electricity. It is probably not illegal, but pretty dodgy none the less.
Look at Energy Saving Trust - Energy Efficiency & Energy Conservation to combat Climate Change. for details of the schemes

your house needs to be south facing before they will consider putting them up on your roof and there is a minimum roof area to be covered,if you can get it go for it,consider it
as renting your roof space,
Solarman.

Is the "roof lease" transferable - should you need to sell your property in the next 25 years?

How does having a roof lease affect the sale of a house? Having to explain to potential purchasers about the deal might complicate (read: make less desirable) matters.

But, if you're going to be there for the duration, sounds like a good thing. If the company goes bankrupt or the government changes the rules...you still have the panels!

Reading the replies, BwB made an important point. If you want to sell your home during the 25 year lease of your roof, you are faced with a problem, if the purchaser does not want the panels on the roof. You have no come back. You have to purchase the panels (compulsary) to have it removed. It states if you are south facing and have 30 square roofing with no obstruction, it is free. If not fully south facing and with 20 square roofing, you get a Solar share deal, that is they can pipe some of the electricity for themselves (something similar to that) Mastadon mentioned in his post, they make a load of money while I may not get the advantage of the panels. To date, I am dubious about the 25 year lease.

wonder if this is what the Geant hypermarket have done in narbonne ...they have covered virtually all their car parking with solar panels fitted on steel frames about 5 metres high , excellent shade in the summer

how many panels ? about 1,500

I have phoned the Agents and told them I am no longer interested, as I wasn't pleased with the 25 year roof lease, reason being, if I wanted to sell my home I would have a problem if the buyer did not want the panels on the roof, or, was not prepared to take over the lease. He was okay with it, so as far I am concerned that is the end of it. Thanks to all for your input. it helped to reach a quick decision
